Tried to, when I was serving as a peacekeeper in the former Yugoslavia during the break-up and civil war. We were called in to clear an antitank mine that someone had tried to bury in a wheelrut on a drit track running through a village in Bosnia. We were pertty leery because the thing was obviously visible and we thought that whoever put it in place was just trying to suck us in to an ambush. And we were right. I got the crap detail and was the one tasked with disarming the mine (normally we'd just lob a clump of HE onto them and blow them in place, but this was too close to civilian structures, so we had to remove it), while I was on my gut, probing around so see if they'd left any nasty surprises, they lit us up from the treeline about 300m to our right. I had no idea where the fire was coming from, so I just crouched odwn behind a low stone wall that was parallel to the dirt track. Unfortunately for me, I was on the same side of the wall as the treeline and rounds were smacking into it. I flipped over the wall, duck walked over to my pack and weapon, and started firing in the same direction everyone else was. Didn't see a damned thing, not even muzzle flashes, I just fired.
Sgt. popped smoke, the APC pulled up, we piled in and got out. End of story.
