If i had to choose, which i did, it would be neither.
I would fight for my family, and friends in which case i would call myself part of the Resistance (resist the enemy from entering my life)
Countries are invisible borders which are not worth the blood of men/women/children, the people close to me are my blood.
True. I'd rather be a medic, someone working for the Red Cross/Peace Corps/Nurse Corps and working in a field hospital. I'm actually thinking about doing an internship overseas next summer. :)Mercenary don't always get paid much, and historically they've been awfully expendable.

Very true. But the use of PMC's have exploded after 9/11. In fact, many of our military operations in Iraq are supported by private firms. You are right about one thing, they are expendable.Mercenary don't always get paid much, and historically they've been awfully expendable.

Isn't it the same? You're fighting for the interests of other people.dont-read-thisIts kinda iffy in a sense. The line between mercs and soldiers is usually quite wide. Many operations a PMC would do, a nation's military wouldn't dare to do. Or in cases, PMC's can be sent in quicker then troops. In one of Africa's conflicts, PMC's were used before the UN even got around to getting peace keepers together.

Don't remember exactly which armies/countries/kings but during wars over land, crusades, etc, mercenaries were extremely expendable.Mercenary don't always get paid much, and historically they've been awfully expendable.

Passage describing Machiavelli's view of mercenaries. If you don't know who he is read "The Prince".
It's fantastic. "The basic problem of mercenaries is that they are loyal to the wage and not the prince, and a wage is insufficient motivation for a man to sacrifice his life. This problem is even more stark when one contemplates the mercenary captain. If he is a capable man, he may aspire to prince-hood and take the prince's own nation by force. If he is not capable, then he will bring about that nation's ruin through his own incompetence"
The merc, soldier of fortune, always had that appeal to it. Whether it's freelance or working for a PMC (though some would argue contractors and mercs are entirely different), there is more freedom than being a soldier, though in saying that, I'm sure real life mercenaries have a way of life different to what's shown in movies in games. Still, I would rather be a merc any day than a solider.

The only 'recognized' PMC company over there is EO working out of South Africa. If your caught and tried as a merc, its the death penalty for you.Mercenary don't always get paid much, and historically they've been awfully expendable.

I mean, I wouldn't want to fight "Blackwater", but I wouldn't really want to associate with them at all.
