They say you can't buy happiness. So if you had a choice, would you rather be Rich or Happy?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Who says I can't be both? You may not be able to buy happiness, but there's nothing that says you can't achieve each of them independently.SmashBrosLegendWell I suppose he means if you had to choose :P Duh. Good points though.
I'd...rather be happy I guess. Though having things and being able to buy lots really helps me out of depression alot.
So can anybody here tell me with a straight face that not having to work, being able to provide to those you love all while doing whatever the hell you want wouldnt make you happy?
I fail to see where in that equation you could even possibly be unhappy. Point it out please.
And dont even bring up all those sob stories about people winning the lottery and then ruining their life. In those cases its stupidity causing the problems...not the money.
The fact is that, Money + common sense = happiness
I challenge you to prove otherwise.
I chose rich so I could give other people money so maybe that'll make them happy. Because I don't care if I'm not happy, just aslong my love ones and friends are.

I agree wholeheartedly, money gives you opportunity.
If you're rich and you're unhappy, it's a lot easier to be happy than when you're poor. Besides, you are the one who deals with relationships, if you can't be happy and are rich you should go see a psychologist.
On the other hand, I would rather be happy with my family than rich by getting their money because they died...
Silly question since you can say anything and still be right.
no one is really happy you'd have to be completely ignorant or self absorbed to be happy. so why not be richgreen_obsidianThat's a terribly pessimistic view. I am neither ignorant nor self-absorbed, yet I am very happy. Just because you have failed to find happiness does not mean others aren't capable of it.

sorry i didnt mean to offend anyone, for where i am in life i am happy its just that with all the suffering in the world there is no way any one can be truly happy, at least if youre rich you can do somthing to help others

true its a personal view, which is what was asked for, and like i said i didnt mean to offend

It doesn't matter. The way that the question is worded implies that you have one OR the other, not both. Seriously, though, if you are happy, you are happy. One has to assume that money is not an issue for you or at least not a significant one, because your happiness is already a given...
The whole point of aspiring to be rich is to be happy. So if you don't have to be rich to be happy then what's the point?Kritical_Strike
Exactly. There, that is what I was trying to say I guess.

green_obsidian
Yes but the question does not imply that if you choose 'rich', you have to be unhappy for the rest of your life.

I kind of took it that it did.

Also, there is this:

I know, you're all going to think that is ridiculous, but things aren't always what people imagine them to be.

Nobody actually "doesn't care if they're happy". What is meant when someone says that is that they're happy when they see other people being happy. Everyone cares whether or not they're happy; you wouldn't do something if you didn't think it would improve your emotional state in some way.
As far as I can tell, this question is asking whether or not you would rather be rich or happy, as if to say that if you pick rich, you will be unhappy. If seeing others being happy makes you happy, that would imply that you would be unable to help others, as otherwise there would not be the rich/happy dichotomy.
If the question implies that you're unhappy for the rest of your life, it doesn't make sense... Anyone is happy sometimes.
I would choose happy if it implies that I would be deeply 'unhappy' like the death of someone, an injury, going to jail. Otherwise, I'd rather be a bit unhappy but get the money (hard job, working for christmas) since the money will bring me a bit of happiness :P
For those of you who say money can't buy happiness, watch a little kid at Christmas with his or her gifts...
I believe money can buy happiness. Give me a couple million and I'll show you. ;)
Money in itself may not be able to buy happiness, but it can definitely buy the things that make me happy. I wanna be rich.Oleg_Huzwog
Amen to that!
I think happiness is just an illusion that blinds you from seeing the sadness in the world. I mean, if you take away the things that makes you happy, you'll realize there's so much sadness and sufferings around the world. What would be the point if you're the only one that's happy but the people around you aren't. So I chose rich, at least then, I could provide my friends and family more illusions to make them happy for the rest of their lives and mines.
