I think I could live with that. But I probably wouldn't voluntarily do it.
I mean, if I had to spend that year in prison, and then got surprised with a miliion dollar check as I was walking to my freedom after the Year In Prison was over, I'd probably think it was a fair trade.
But if I knew the deal before I ever went to prison, I probably wouldn't agree to the deal. I mean, a million dollars is very tempting, but it ain't THAT much. For example, I'm 30 years old. If I figure that I'll die by the age of 65, that gives me 35 more years to live. Divide one million by 35, and that's a little more than $28,500 per year. That's a nice bonus, but that ain't exactly an incredibly sum of money.
That'd allow me to never have to work another day in my life, provided I was comfortable with the life of someone who only makes $28,000 per year.
And I've got to admit, that's still tempting. But I'm not quite sure it's worth all of the various horrible stuff that can happen to me during a year in prison.
But on the other hand, if I had already been to prison for even a few months, then I'd take the deal in a heartbeat. If I'd previously been to prison for 5 months and DIDN'T get a million dollars upon my relaease, then I'd probably take the offer. Because if I can survive 5 months, I can probably survive a year. And if I already did 5 months with no reward, I figure it'd be very tempting to do 12 months with A ONE MILLION DOLLAR REWARD.
