In the future, if we are able to do such a thing like before your baby is born you can select the eye color, hair color, skin tone, likes/dislikes, facial structure, muscle, etc. Would you do it?

I wouldn't, I would feel like I was controlling the future of another life, and well, watching that play out would be boring. Besides it would take alot of the fun out of being a parent, since you wouldn't be prone to all the unique surprises and experiences it would otherwise bring.

I would. :) I'll take playing mother nature before risking the chance of giving birth to an ugly kid. =D

Yes, to an extent. To eliminate any biological defects or diseases or birth issues. Beyond that, no.

This. By going further people would create a 'look' that any kids without would be discriminated against because their parents are too poor

Well that happens anyway with clothes and stuff. Still I do agree that any more than eliminating birth defects is a bad thing. I would love to not be born dyslexic but there is nothing I can do about it.

That would depend on what the technology allowed me to do and how safe each modification would be.

No, but I would support embryo-selection in that I would not want to have a child with a severe mental or physical handicap.

I know but this would make discrimination worse and just because it happens already doesn't make it right. Schools have uniform to minimise bullying based on clothes anyway.

I don't think so. If I have to go to the expense and pain of raising a sprog to full size, it had better be carrying a hell of a lot of my genetic material. If not, then it's got to be cuddly, hypoallergenic and able to catch a frisbee in its mouth at the very least - though I'm not sure that really counts as a child any more.

I'd be mighty tempted to in terms of making sure the child was completely healthy and mentally normal by my standards. Everything else like looks? My genes are too awesome.

Is that based on genetics? I would have thought environmental factors were more likely to influence that.

Crooked Teeth? I think it is most everyone in my family had to get braces because we always have just one tooth in the back sticking out in my family the same tooth.

Using it to remove genetic or birth defects would be a responsible use and I would support that. More than that would be irresponsible in my book.

I do not support it, no. I know many will disagree with me here... but I dont believe in tampering with natural selection. And yall can say whatever you want about that idea... thats seriously how i feel. And thats for 'altering defects'. As far as 'customization' .... if you want your kid to look a certain way, get with a girl or guy that you want it to look like. Maybe it will happen. *shrugs*

I believe that the ethical ramifications of such are too great. yes it's okay to do this to remove disease but to do cosmetic or ,even worse, aptitude changes would be terrible for society. basically if allowed you would have the rich and poor divided even more.

Depends on the genetic enhancement. For superficial looks, probably not. Personality? No way. Potential diseases? Definitely. Enhancements such as extra strength/athletic ability, smarts, enhanced senses, etc.? Where do I sign up???

.... um... cause its more natural perhaps? ... Oh and with my post i just wanna say i didnt mean go out and like have a baby just cause you want it to look a certain way.. thats make sure your partner is someone you want to have a baby with before deciding to have one. ... no surprise sex! ... I'm sorry for your loss. My mother lost two (one right before me and one right after me). In any case, I'm just pointing out that in a way, we naturally manipulate the genes of our childeren even though we may not be conscious of it. I think it would have been cool if my parrents could have given me extreme abilities with a few tweaks of a gene or two.

So where does natural end and unnatural begin? Opperating on unborn babies isn't natural, but it happens. Baby formula isn't natural, etc. Really, there isn't much natural left in this world, and it's only going to become more unnatural as science and technology advance. I think in a few hundered years, we will be manipulating the genes of our childeren. I don't think it's avoidable. My mother went on to have 5 childeren.

And so I go on to say Gene tampering is where Humans begin playing as God... and well.. Im not athiest. *Puts up flame shield* I understand operating on unborn babies is not natural, and I know one could argue that there are similarities ... "Fixing a problem"... but one is more of a moral issue then the other. And.. well.. this is getting a bit too deep for me and.. well I dont think we will see completely eye to eye on it, so I will back out now, respectfully. :)

Yes, gene customisation, augmentation, physical therapy, discrete cybernetics and whatever else to give him or her the edge over other people when older. Can you imagine how cool it would be if your parents had done that to you given the opportunity?

I would ensure my kid doesn't end up with my Grandfathers nose. I would DIE to ensure this. Also if you could take out genetic predisposition for certain things like cancer than I see no reason not to.

Thisx10. I would make the perfect child and live a great life where i get free stuff because i'm not that adult down the street with the "thing" he feeds and clothes.
