yeah thats pretty freaking sad. its b/c we have generally a stupid (uneducated or very poor education) population (im an American btw)MichaeltheCM
Apparently since he made a baseless assumption and people are agreeing with him....
I flip on the TV and browse the news networks everyday. CNN? Please. No one cares about Paris Hilton and some wrestler dude that killed his family then killed himself. Fox? Even worse. The extreme right-wingers are pathetic. I watch O'Reilly just to laugh at him. MSNBC? More of the same. The only good news network I've watched is BBC news, and they're British. If you really want to know about what happens in the Middle East, watch the English Al Jazeera. Nevermind, the CIA will watch you if you subscribe.
[QUOTE="LukeAF24"]That's a vast generalization, and completely false.marcocat
If it was false, then there should be strikes everywhere asking to end war.
In keeping with the topic....that doesn't necessarily follow. It's a flawed conclusion.

Some people support the war you know.
And I don't think Congress really cares about protesters..

Gernerally speaking, yes, Americans care more about what the latest celebrity scandle is than who won the French prime minister elections or other major world news. If you need proof just turn on the news. You're likely to see something along the lines of:
"In other news the death toll in Darfur has risen to X. Now stay tuned for more coverage about who Anna Nicole Smith's baby daddy is, including an interview with some of her friends about who they think it might be, after commercial break!"
Or did you think that nothing happened elsewhere in the world during the month the press spent covering the Paris Hilton prison debacle?

Again...generalizations never fit. I don't care about celebrities...my family doesn't....my friends don't...my coworkers don't. Who are these people that only care about celebrities? Facts not opinion.....
As for the news...they put that crap on to fill time. The important news is still reported. With 24 hour news channels now I'd imagine it's a job to keep finding different spins on events.

just turn on the news. during the anna nicole smith thingy, you heard nothing about the war in iraq.Michael moore who was supposed to talk to larry king about the healthcare issue got bumped for some rich spoiled white girl who went to prison for violating the terms of her probation

You're a flawed conclusion. :|
Because alot of stuff going on in Iraq is held information. My bother tells me alot of stories about his friends in Iraq and I never hear some of the stuff on television.MuSiC-pLaYeR

Hence the reason I said "generally speaking" (as in "on average", not "always"). Like I said, if you want proof that most Americans care more about celebreties than real news, just turn on the news. The thing about the news is that they put on what they know will get ratings. Darfur doesn't get good ratings. Paris Hilton going to jail does. Like I said in my example, while the important news is still reported on, the air time it gets is completely out of proportion to the coverage that celebrity scandles get.

You didn't read my entire topic....and no...MOST do not. Those who like obsess about celebrity are actually the minority.

What topic? I read your post if that's what you meant. And the only proof there I saw that you offfered that most Americans don't care about celebrities was your anecdotal evidence where you cite co-workers, family, and friends. Let me repeat myself, but this time more clearly:
News stations like CNN and Fox News are businesses. They sell news. Like all businesses they obey the laws of supply and demand, because if they didn't they'd be out of business. For that reason, they only air what people will watch, since that's the only way they can get money. Thus, the fact that they're willling to devote almost their entire broadcast schedule to Paris Hilton going to jail says something about America (their market). While yes, there is a sizeable portion of Americans who don't care about celebrities, the fact of the matter is that most do. If most Americans cared about international news more than celebrities, then guess what (think back to your economics classes)? They'd fill the air time with international news. To really force this concept home, let's take another example: If most Americans cared more about farming than other news, then CNN would air lots of coverage about the latest problems facing the farming industry, harvest numbers, and crop prices.
In contrast look at European news outlets. There's barely any reproting on celeb news at all. Why? Europeans care more about real news. To illustrate my point just go to bbc.co.uk and cnn.com. Right now the headlines on the sites include:
CNN:
NFL star indicted over dogfighting
Probe: Benoit's son 'sedated' when killed
Victoria Beckham show ripped, barely watched
How Jim Morrison really died
BBC:
To give CNN some credit though at least both they and the BBC have the same top story (A jet crash in brazil killing roughly 200)
EDIT:
Ok I lied. Actually CNN's top story just changed to: "The estranged husband of a singer shot to death on stage last weekend has been found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police say."
Like I said. America cares more about celebrities.
