You absolutely can. Often times, it's one of the best ways to start an essay.

All I have to say is a have to turn in a 5 page essay tomorrow, and I only have 2 pages done. Woohoo, yeah but it shouldn't be to hard, (Intro To Film) I just have to analize "Little Miss Sunshine" HA.

I've never heard of someone using a question as their thesis, however it's a great way to start the essay and grab the reader's attention.

no. you need to make it a statement that ends in a period. your thesis must be arguable and have provable parts. Example thesis: Leonidas is a hero in the movie "300" because he helped defend the city of Sparta, valiantly led his men into battle, and killed off much of the persian army.

PS: the reason I said it can't be a question is because you cannot argue a point with a question. I couldn't say, "Was leonidas a hero because he helped defend the city of Sparta, valiantly lead his men into battle, and kill much of the persian army?".

It's perfectly fine. It's probably the #1 way to start one. It catches the reader's attention, and it's creative. Teachers like that kind of stuff

not very common, but possible. i hate teachers who tell you how you can and cant write, its contradictory (if thats the right word here)
