I don't care if a store owner does this (in fact, its a good thing) but people should be allowed to talk in whatever lanuage they want in public.linkthewindow
I agree but you need to learn English to deal with business and other people.
Haha... ya, because Spanish is a prominent language in the usa :| People need to be stop being so darn insecure about themselves, and just let the natural course of social evolution to occur. If spanish starts replacing enlish, so be it. Forcing conformity on a society based purely on one's concept of normality is just assinine. rimnet00
english is the official language - if you're running a business I think it should be a prerequisite

Well when the president starts speaking Spanish I will say ok but till then. And why do you think schools in japan teach English and not spanish because English is the language of business

Actually Chinese is starting to take over. That will be the language of business of the 21st century.

That is fine if all the local places speak one language but there are allot that dont. There was a time when people would come to this country and take pride that they are now an American and try hard to learn English and still speak there nativa language to.

What time was that?
[QUOTE="blasto65_basic"]
Why? There are districts of Denver (where I live) where English is never spoken there. And businesses do just fine speaking Spansih, or Vietnamese, or whatever other lnaguage they want to speak. Get over yourself and realize that there are actually more people in America besides just the white majority. Engrish_Major

You mean when the cities' Chinatowns and Little Italys were forming? Proof more people learned English then than now when immigrating?

Uh, no. Never happened. Do you honestly think we could've cheated the Chinese railroad workers so much if they'd mastered the English language out of this supposed "pride to speak English"? Give me a break. Next folks will be saying that Native American "reeducation" was totally voluntary.In any event, drop the precedent argument, because it doesn't work here, otherwise you'd be fluent in French if you were worth your weight in salt.
Lastly, who cares? Americans need to get over it and quit whining. The rest of the "advanced world" is multi-lingual, and it doesn't hurt them any.

Even if he doesnt he will still probably deter foreign speakers from his shop.Man, this is what capitalism does to us. People are starving to death and getting killed in crappy countries. And we think foreigners speaking a language is a problem. People need to be a LITTLE more Nihilistic...

Any private business can discriminate if they want. It may not be good business practice, but it's completely legal. I could walk into a store and the owner can tell me to leave because he doesn't like the size of my nose. Sure, I'd be irked but I wouldn't go crying to the government about it.FragStains'64 Civil Rights Act much? :|

... ok, then. It seems I'm left with little choice.TITLE II--INJUNCTIVE RELIEF AGAINST DISCRIMINATION IN PLACES OF PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION
SEC. 201. (a) All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, and privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin.
(b) Each of the following establishments which serves the public is a place of public accommodation within the meaning of this title if its operations affect commerce, or if discrimination or segregation by it is supported by State action:
(1) any inn, hotel, motel, or other establishment which provides lodging to transient guests, other than an establishment located within a building which contains not more than five rooms for rent or hire and which is actually occupied by the proprietor of such establishment as his residence;
(2) any restaurant, cafeteria, lunchroom, lunch counter, soda fountain, or other facility principally engaged in selling food for consumption on the premises, including, but not limited to, any such facility located on the
premises of any retail establishment; or any gasoline station;
(3) any motion picture house, theater, concert hall, sports arena, stadium or other place of exhibition or entertainment; and
(4) any establishment (A)(i) which is physically located within the premises of any establishment otherwise covered by this subsection, or (ii) within the premises of which is physically located any such covered establishment, and (B) which holds itself out as serving patrons of such covered establishment.

A restaurant is considered public accommodation so it falls under that law. But a majority of other business can refuse service like retail stores and such.
US has no set language.. not even english.. darkfox101
Right on! I think Spanish is the second most widely spoken language here in the States.
Oh wow please cut the crap. These people can be proud.. they just don't want to learn English. That's their prerogative, and it certainly is a disadvantage, but it doesn't have anything to do with PRIDE or RESPECT. And they definitely don't have to live up to your standards or speak english so you can understand what they're saying. This world doesn't revolve around you, and there are thousands of other languages that anybody can speak if they want to.Lets see 30's 40's 50's when people were proud.
