Rap lacks a melody.

It clealy states within the definition of music that a melody is required for it to qualify as music.

You can't deny it.

ITS FACT.

Rikusaki

I think you're getting confused about vocal melody.

Is a drum solo not music?

Rap = music.

dude, i replyed to this ignorant statement before in this thread, and il do it again...

does this better suit ur definition of "music"

Nujabes - Feather

Shinsight Trio - Early Dayz Amazement

Ohmega Watts - Stay Tuned

if u want, i'll even post more...

That just sounds like more Rap. Not music.

if u dont find any "melody" in any of those songs, on top of the good lyrics, plus not even considering them to be "music"

then there is something really wrong with you

im not trying to force u to like it, just tryin to make a point here

IMO, Rap isn't music.

A drum solo is music as much as a guitar solo is.

It's not the pitch of the sound itself. It's also how you combine different kinds of sounds to make a melody.

Rap doesn't have that.

If a melody is a combination of different sounds, than hip hop has a melody.

I just cant stand rap. When people say a rapper is more talented than a guitar player such as Joe satriani or John petrucci, I get angry. You can argue all you want, but playing guitar is deffinetly a lot harder than rapping. Some rappers can play guitar but they never incorporate there guitar playing in their music enough. Which cancels out the relitvety of them playing.

Bad is your opinion. And not all Hip-Hop music is "computer generated", in fact my favourite Hip-Hop producers sample. And you'll find repetition is an integral part of a lot of modern music.

modern rap is and embarisment, apart from the few rappers out there they still rap "old school" like nas X and a few others, but come on chamillionair has nothink on rappers like, N.W.A, sugar hill gang, Grandmaster flesh, Eminem ( older albums ) and tupac biggie busta rhymes etc u no wat i am saying. Old style rap = the best music, Modern style = no way near as good.

Hip-Hop producers aren't musicians who couldn't make it. They didn't try to learn an instrument and then give up and take up producing. Love for Hip-Hop and even necessity made the best like Pete Rock and DJ Premier become prodcuers, as much as you like to assume that they really wanted to play guitar but were too indolent that isn't the case. And do you know how knowledgable of recorded music you have to be to sample originally and creatively? I suppose not.

lol ive come to an end of this childish debate, all i got to say is hip hop is music, whether you like it or not

your extremely narrow minded when it comes to music and cant ATLEAST recognize a good tune when u hear it(such as all the ones i posted in this thread, forget the TC's song) and i feel sorry for u that ur like that

the composer's/producers u listed are no doubt, INCREDIBLE

i personally love all the music form square, rpgs, others games, etc

and i also recognize and enjoy all of ****c rocks greats(zeppelin, doors, floyd, the who, rolling sotnes, queen, clapton, many many more) , and even modern hard rock/metal(mettalica, slayer, etc, etc)

thats it for me tonight

good night OT

You have to have talent to be as good as John Petrucci. Not everyone can pick up a guitar, practice constantly and be good. Some people just dont have the talent. The same can be said with rappers. Just cause a rapper can rhyme behind a beat for 12 hours a day dosent mean he's talented.

Petrucci wanks. Seriously, good for you, you can play a bagillion notes a minute. You music isn't compelling at all and the lyrics don't mean anything on a personal level, the way good MCs do.

Except that there is this thing called "music" which MCs tend to rap over.

In my oppinion, its such bad and repetitive computer generated beats and sounds that they should be phased out.

Bad is your opinion. And not all Hip-Hop music is "computer generated", in fact my favourite Hip-Hop producers sample. And you'll find repetition is an integral part of a lot of modern music.

Exactly. They cant play any instruments for themselves so they have to take things from what other people work hard to do.

Hip-Hop producers aren't musicians who couldn't make it. They didn't try to learn an instrument and then give up and take up producing. Love for Hip-Hop and even necessity made the best like Pete Rock and DJ Premier become prodcuers, it wasn't a cheap way out because they really wanted to play guitar but couldn't. And do you know how knowledgable of recorded music you have to be to sample originally and creatively? I suppose not.

Obviously producing hip hop is easy....;)

It is. All I have to do is make a beat to go along with a nursery rhyme and I have a rap song. Easy as that.

In my oppinion, I don think rap should be called music but instead a poetic art form which it is.

Rikusaki

Except that there is this thing called "music" which MCs tend to rap over.

In my oppinion, its such bad and repetitive computer generated beats and sounds that they should be phased out.

But it's still music....

How?

I can't believe that we have come to this.

Actually thinking that this is really good music.

We need to apriciate the geniuses that actually write MUSIC.

MUSIC that fits the definiton of MUSIC....

Nobuo Uematsu

Yoko Shimomura

Hans Zimmer

John Williams

Appreciation of Hip-Hop and other music is not exclusive.

But if you'd rather take the snob approach and pretend Hip-Hop isn't music to puff up your own supposedly supreme musical taste then be my guest.

Practicing guitar solos 12 hours a day in your bedroom doesn't make you talented.

Yeah. If you actually listened to Dream Theater, there music is Epic to say the least.

"Make a beat" entails a lot if you're trying to better Hip-Hop's greatest producers.

I can make a hip hop song by getting a nursery rhyme and putting a beat behind it. Can I not?

What is your point?

That any form of music is as simple as you make it. Even my own favorite genre"Metal".
