What's your favorite operating system and why?

I personally like Linux the best (my distribution is Gentoo). I'm not going to argue that it's better than Windows, but I will say it can accomplish the same tasks without paying or being bound by a license or product key.

Ports system is in FreeBSD is an awesome package manager. It has the source code and a precompiled package so you can either do a quickie install, or compile it yourself with all the dependcies gathered for you. Unlike most common distros of Linux these days, it doesn't come with a gui, so you can install one if you'd like. It's what I'd also call more "stable". And of course there is native support for ZFS because there is no liscencing issue conflict with the BSD liscence and Sun's. Linux and zfs aren't getting along well because of the liscencing issues. The directory structure is more neat, /usr/local/etc is where things belonged to users go when installed, and uh some other random stuff.

Windows. I feel gimped using OSX and Linux/Ubuntu. With windows when I'm online I know that anything I download or want to buy will be compatible, not so with OSX or a Linux dist. Yeah there is lots of Open Source softawre, but most of it is pure **** regardless of how many nut huggers that junk has.

Windows. I grew tired of overpaying for Macs years ago, and my patience has eroded over time so that I have no desire to install Linux. Not that there's anything wrong with Linux, but it's the computing equivalent of having a kit car in your garage, where most of your time is spent tinkering with it rather than driving it.

Hmm, I don't like Macs themselves but I wouldn't say that. Their operating system kernel is UNIX, which by definition means it's going to be more stable. It also has some very interesting things like dmg files(the equiv of exe), where all dmg files launch in a virtual drive, where they cannot touch other processes, this is HELLA secure, except noticibly slower. Security always comes first, hence you never see Mac viruses. Of course I hate the userbase, and also Macs since they are UNIX, porting apps from say BSD or even Linux is much much simpler, that porting something to Windows.

Windows is a horribly designed operating system, but it is also compatible with the most software and hardware, which gives it an instant advantage over Mac OS., P Windows is only good for gaming. Mac OS X is totally useless, because every advantage over Windows it has is tripled in Linux, Solaris, and BSD. As you can see in my signature, I'm a user of many different operating systems. My current favorites include Ubuntu 9.10, PC-BSD 7.1.1, and OpenSolaris. I'm also familiar with FreeBSD, Puppy Linux, Fedora, Arch Linux, and Slackware among others. Open source, UNIX-like operating systems are superior to Windows in every imaginable way except for major gaming. Even though I own a Mac, the OS is incredibly gimped compared to other UNIX systems. There is no justification for Apple charging for OS X when Linux, Solaris, and BSD are free.

You should try Linux Mint or PC-BSD. No configuration involved. Codecs, drivers, and applications out of the box. And unlike with Windows, there is no maintenance. No defragmentation, no antivirus, no firewalls, no disk clean ups, etc.

Windows 7. It's got more options that Mac, better options that Linux, and plays all my games too. Price doesn't matter to me when I'm choosing my favorite. I don't say a Honda Civic is my favorite car just because it's cheap and runs well.

Compiz-fusion? Bash? Compiling a custom kernel? The amount of "options" Linux has is limited only by the imagination and capability of the user. Every aspect of your system is completely customizable.

Ubuntu 9.04. I've found that between Wine and DOSBox, every game I ever wanted runs just fine. I've even bought and played Windows games in Linux exclusively (Like Portal and Braid). Oh, and the bootspeed...ah, the bootspeed. Parent's Windows XP 3 ghz Core 2 Duo boots in 4 minutes; my ancient Pentium D boots in 30 seconds., and has booted at the same speed ever since I installed it. Also, I like the easibility of compiling stuff in Linux. It's especially useful when you need to compile Glide enabled DOSBox to play Tomb Raider with pretty graphics :P

Haven't tried 7 yet though; looking forward to playing with it. Regardless, I'll always keep an Ubuntu dual boot handy.

Well that's the thing about that word "better." It's subjective to the person presenting the word, so though you may like typing out commands for things, and have pretty spinning boxes, and having a custom kernel (though it's better than the other options presented), those features are not useful to me in most situations, and they are definitely not "better" than my options in Windows that I don't have to spend hours to do. Subjectively written, of course.

Aside from major gaming, every "option" available in Windows is also available in Linux. The reverse is not true.

Maybe you can help me then. I built a Ubuntu entertainment center for my brother and wanted to get them access to Netflix "Watch Now", which will not work without Windows Media Player 11. It also says it require IE, but I'm not so sure about that. I looked around for about a month before I gave up because the only options I thought were viable was to run a virtual machine, which this computer wasn't really capable of handling, and installing Windows, which I didn't want to do because I didn't want to buy it. I've already tried several different browsers and installed codec packs and players. Can you offer a suggestion?

The example above illustrates my like/despise relationship with Ubuntu and Knoppix which are the two distros I've used.

PlayOn+XBMC for Ubuntu. PlayOn will need to be registered, but it is possible.
