As someone with growing interest in music, I wanted to see wanted to see what OT had to say on the best of the best. Heres mine, from top to bottom. I also, have such works on a website I work with a complete 1-50 list. PM me if your interested in it. Lists wanted but not needed:)
10. "Naked as We Came" Iron & Wine- From one of my favorite bands comes one of my favorite songs of all time. Naked as we came is not anything sexual as the title might suggest, but rather a song about life and death and how when we die we want a loved one to be there with us just as when we were born. The Melody is simply remarkable and there's something about I&W's tone (A one man band) that makes your jaw drop.
9. "Baba O'Riley" The Who- This along with the next 8 songs all made a push for the number 1 spot. Baba O'Riley is a musical Masterpiece. Its odd instruments draw you in for booming vocals, followed by an amazing guitar solo along with an instrument I honestly couldn't name. Its incredible how such an odd mix in music could lead to this near perfect piece of music.
8. "Lose Yourself" Eminem- This song changed the rap industry forever. The lyrics that flow from Eminem are true to anyone who has had that one chance. In 5 minutes he captures an entire emotion of anticipation and with it blew everyones mind. While some of his lines may be vulgar his message reeks truth, and I don't think any other artist has come this close to hitting it on the head.
7. "Clocks" Coldplay- You won't ever find a modern piano that can stick with you like Clocks has with me, and a lot of Coldplay's listeners. It was the start of an era in this genre, and it broke up a cage of wonder in the music industry. Chris Martin's voice is perfect for the song, and I swear to you it could not have worked it one single thing had been changed.
6. "Ashes" Embrace- Alot of you probably don't know who embrace is, maybe all of you. Ashes is a song that has been with me since the 6th or 7th grade and I just haven't stopped listening. While the lyrics are sad in nature, the message is a strong and positive one. Just because something has beaten you, doesn't mean you still can't conquer it. This is a song you have to check out.
5. "Jesus Walks" Kanye West- The theme continues. As you can see, as the list winds down, the songs are all about breaking musical barriers. Kanye West broke the biggest one of all, the religious barrier. While people obviously had written songs before about God and Religion, not once had a up and coming popular artist such as Kanye West dared to take the risk. Not only did he do all of this, but he made it seem easy, and created a song that we should all remember for a very long time.
4. "What it's Like" Everlast- This song is very down to earth. Its hard to listen to the whole thing and not feel for one of the victims, who know "What its Like" to be honest, there has never been a song that I've listened to that holds so much information and emotion in such little time. They could honestly write a script over the lyrics
3. "Don't Forget Me" Red Hot Chile Peppers- A largely underrated song. Filled with sorrow, this song is truth in its saddest form. Great guitar, Drums, and comes with it is Kiedis's best vocals. Its hard to believe that this song came out of RHCP, because it just is a completely different feel than they have ever given us.
2. "Stairway to Heaven" Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin did something incredible with this song. With each new instrument that was was added to the song, the pace quickened and quickened more after that, until finally you hit what you have been waiting for. The legendary guitar solo along with booming vocals. Its a song that is filled with anticipation, and doesn't leave you hanging at the end. Truly the best from LZ.
1. " Hallelujah" Jeff Buckley- In my mind the most powerful, and emotionally felt song of all time. The lyrics are simply beautiful and Buckley's performance was a work of art that wasn't meant to be repeated. There isn't a whole lot to the song, except thought provoking lyrics and potent vocals that will leave you stunned. Truly the best song of all time.
