Strangely, my favourite version of that song is from the Muppets. Call me strange, but I love it. :P

Interesting site. I can't really pick one, probably something off Garage Days by Metallica. STP did a good job on Revolution before too.

Me too, a bit. My dad's a big Cash fan and knew I was a huge NIN fan. When he heard Hurt he said "here's real music", I was like dad, umm...Mine you would Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, originally done by Johnny Cash.

Everyone ALWAYS talks about this cover, and this cover was garbage.
You can pretty much go two ways when you do a cover: either copy the original material as much as possible, or try to diverge from it and take it somewhere where no one imagined.
Jimi Hendrix did the latter when he covered "All Along the Watchtower". Johnny Cash did the former when he covered "Hurt".
And the original NIN version was just ****ing better. Johnny Cash tried to flat out copy NIN, without having the musical complexity to match the original work. So we pretty much get the equivalent of Sheryl Crow doing a straight-forward acoustic guitar cover of GNR's "Sweet Child of Mine".
Bottom line...it's ****.
And the music video doesn't matter, because **** music videos. Those haven't been relevant since about 1995. And even long before then, music videos have had a long history of not having a single ****ing thing to do with the actual music. Music videos are just pretty pictures that MTV put together to distract people from whether or not the music they were playing was any good. **** that ****.
But the cover sucks. NIN did it better, and the only reason people kiss Johnny Cash's ass about this is because Johnny Cash is a musical legend who died shortly after the cover was released. It was a lazy and unambitious cover, and it doesn't hold a candle to the original.
I was thinking the same thing, great original, great cover.Painkiller by Death is great.

Why can't he just do the song in his own words? The song has new meaning because of the new point of view. Instead of a real empire of dirt, johnny cash actually has an empire. It was a song from the young for the young but cash, being old, made it for everyone.

Hurt: A song from the young for the young?
That's like saying all young people are heroin addicts who want to kill themselves when they realise how much of a dick they've been.
I love The Birthday Massacres cover of Last Daze. Only U-Tube link I could find for it comes with this silly Sailor Moon music video someone made. Much prefer it to the original. One of my most played music files, such a fast, frantic, aggressive track yet at the same time kind of cute.
