What are your personal thoughts on homeschooling where you live?

I live in the US, and I was homeschooled since the sixth grade.

Funny thing is, the average homeschooler in the States has grades that are much, much higher in every field than the average public or even private school student.

Yes, private schools.

I have a 3.62 GPA and scored an 85(Out of 99) on the Navy ASVAB, which is extremely high.

Your thoughts on homeschooling where you live?

I would also note that my mother had the qualifications to homeschool, but wasn't a teacher for a school at any point in her life.

I say it shouldn't be allowed, unless the parents have the relevant qualifications.

The idea is quite nice. However, the fact that many kids who get homeschooled have higher grades than those who don't is a problem.

I don't like the idea of homeschooling because you don't interact with other kids like you do in a real school. Then going from homeschooling into a real school, the person may feel awkward.

Sure homeschooled kids have higher grades, but how could you live with your nonexsistent social life? I mean, part of what helps me through the day is the ability to talk with my friends!

I'm homeschooled and I love it! My mom orders these teaching dvds, where you just print out the work sheets and watch the DVD. It's a lot like normal school except that I don't get summer vacation in exchange of only doing 4 hours of work a day. I think it also helps me become a better person, because there are some ****ers in public school that can really change a person (speaking from expeience) And I still have all my friends from when I was in public school so the friend thing doesn't really matter.

I'm getting homeschooled this year. I actually start tomorrow. In my state it is all done over the computer, so the parent doesn't teach. The reason I'm doing it is because I will be living with my mom this year and the public school here is crap.

Part of school is learning to deal with people, and that includes everyone from friends to people you hate that your forced to do a project with. Working with people is an essential skill in life and homeschooling doesn't allow for this.

Bad for social skills.Proobie44

I say that is one of the most ignorant statements ever, I see people have way better social skills who were homeschool, personal experience. Hell, I went to school all that,I was friendly to anyone no matter how much they sucked, but now I dont have friends anyways. You can always go to church if your a believer, trust me, it is a lot easier than trying to get along with random people who dont have anywhere the same thoughts as you... Mainly I am lonely because there just was no one that I could care about in puiblic school, too many dunces in life for me. I want quality, not quantity.

And yes, this homeschool person is in trigonometry in college, while I am in algebra 2, go figure.

Also he joined sports (just baseball), so he wasnt completely sheltered.

You've never heard of Girl Scouts, 4-H, or sports? School isn't the only place to socialize. Also, there are home school groups where all the local home schooled kids get together and in some cases do their work together.

Education wise, it's much better then public. But IMO, we place too much emphasis middle school, and high school education. Much of what I learned there will never aid me in life, and aside from the friends that I made, it was totally useless. I think school's higher purpose is social interaction, but that's just me.

Yea, if you don't go to public school you'll never learn about how socializing in the real world works with things like popularity and stuff. Seriously, if being homeschooled kills a kids social skills then it was homeschooling done wrong, not homeschooling itself.

I'm homeschooled and it's cool. I take my all classes online and I go to a sports program for HSers. I'm looking to do dual-enrollment at the local collage once I finish up my Algebra 2 class.

I take the classes I want and there's none of the hassles of public school such as apathetic teachers teaching for the test and the geniuses they call students. But then again, the schools around here suck.

It helps you prepare for later in life where almost any job you take on will have people you don't like. Not knowing to how to deal with these kind of people and situations can hold someone back significantly.

my sister went to homeschool until the 9th grade. she graduated with a bachelors at St. Edwards university in Austin and is now the head drama teacher at a high school, my cousin was homeschooled until his senior year in high school he's now a supervisor at a cable company. how many social skills do you take from high school? not much. how much do you learn in high school? that's one reason why we have such low scores. everyone is worried about their kids social skills instead of what really counts, their kids education. people need to homeschool their kids more actually.

Well Im pretty confrontational so I will usually respectfully tell someone if they did something that annoyed me or otherwised made me not want to socialize with that person. They'll either know to not do what they did to/around me or they will just stop assosciating with me.

Although I don't really see what the point of the question was.

Assuming that the child's parents aren't... uhh... ill-equipped from an intellectual perspective, that they have the proper materials (there's usually a curriculum that's mandated by the state in the USA, if I'm not mistaken) and that the child has access to other children to allow themselves emotional growth, etc. I think it's a great idea.

Put simply, many teachers -- even in private schools -- aren't qualified enough, aren't caring enough, etc to do their job. A great deal of this may be due to low salaries, as people with more adequate skills may be drawn to higher paying fields. That's part of it, but that isn't all of it, of course... but I'm in a rush here because my pizza just got done and I have to take it out of the oven.

But high school is sortof like teenager daycare... if I wasn't interested enough in history, lit, science and general learning to look into a lot of this stuff on my own, I probably wouldn't have learned anything during that time.

But my pizza's burning... in short, homeschooling's good if all parties involved are dedicated enough to do it right.

I really don't agree with homeschooling a kid. My brother is home schooled and he doesent like it because he is not around other kids his age. When home schooled you don't get social stimulation as one would in the public education system, then again your there to learn not socialise i guess.
