I will say that I was utterly blown away by the first episode. It was well directed, the production values outstanding, the performances fantastic and the characters seemingly three dimensional. Characters like Steve Buscemis Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who in essences is a corrupt politician seems to have a more sympathetic side such as his affection towards the abused house wife Margaret Shroeder. Or Nuckys driver Jimmy, who wants to achieve higher then he is, but also seems visibly traumatized from his time in World War I.

The Set design is fantastic, and it seems they went into a massive amount of detail capturing Atlantic city in the 1920s. And Scorceses direction, his trademark style is there and while he is not directing the whole series, it really help sets the pace for the rest of the series.

So what did you guys think of the Pilot? Do you plan on continuing it? I do, and it seems HBO already renewed it for a second season!

It started out very slow. At the end though it picked way up. I was wondering where all the killing was (since I miss Sopranos and Deadwood so much). I think it's going to be a classic.

What he said^. May turn into one of my favorite shows. I already like it more than the Soprano's.

Agreed he really stole the show. What I love is that they did not go the easy path, as that you can sympathize with his character, and not be the stereotypical corrupt politician.

It was alright. I'm probably going to miss out on this show to watch Dexter instead. I'll find Boardwalk online though.

It's good. Both main characters are great, so this should be good.

Find another time to watch it. HBO reairs the heck out of their shows over and over thorugh out the week. And they have a ton of channels to do so, yeah you could also find another time to record or watch BE.

I didn't like it, and the sex scene was meaningless and bothered me.

Its neat to see olde tyme AC. It seems to have less crack whores and general sleaze than the contemporary Atlantic City I know and love.

I thought it was a pretty good show and the way it ended was classic mobster type with the hit in the Italian restaurant and the delivering of the goods to the other family. It should be a fun ride with this one and I'm hoping it does well unlike The Pacific which although was great and all just seemed to miss a few things.

[QUOTE="dreDREb13"]I just love the time period that it's set in, as well as the incredible work of Scorcese. Hopefully other directors can get his style down well enough. Can anyone explain what happened at the end, exactly, though? I sort of got confused...

It appear to me at least that Nucky's right hand man saw a business opportunity with Capone and his boys on just cutting the New York guys out of the picture and run booze from Atlantic City to Chicago or something like that. All I know is Nucky basically paid cheaper for the original order from Canada, doubled his money on selling it to the New York guys then his guys went behind him to get the goods back and sell them out again or something along those lines.

It was good pilot, but I am a little worried that the show won't last.

Like Deadwood, the show has very interesting characters and settings, but I can't see what the main storyline is going to be that will keep audience hooked throughout the course of the show.

I think it could last, as that the setting itself can open a number of opportunites for it. Prohibition imo is a fascinating time in our history and it is prime for great story telling. I think with the way the characters are set up too there are a number of possibilities. The whole thing between Nucky and Shroeder, and possible tensions between Jimmy and Nucky, as they are seemingly foreshadowed already.

For everyone worrying about the longevity of the show, its already been picked up for a second season (I believe). Typically, these shows don't run for much longer than 5 or 6 seasons anyway. My hope is that is gets a similar reaction to The Sopranos, but I get the feeling it will be more along the lines of The Wire (ratings wise I mean).

They're advertising like crazy. I think the ratings will be pretty comparable to the Sopranos if the quality holds.

I missed the beginning of the episode but I caught it from the middle. From what I saw it was fantastic and I can't wait for the next episode. I'll have to order HBO when I go home at Christmas to continue watching it.

I believe that they have advertising all over the place for this series. From empire Magazine, to the new republished Tie in Editions of the book the series is inspired by(The book which is a great read mind you, is a none fiction piece and covers Atlantic City from its begginings to the 70s.). I strongly believe HBO is gonig to repeat this high profile advertising with "Game of Thrones"(Which I am also very excited for) with the same amount of money put into it. HBO would be foolish not do it with "Game of Thrones" as that there is alot of anticipation for this series, possibly more so then there was for Empire(Not saying one is better just saying the hype around the projects).

No way. This is the kind of show that appeals to a much greater audience than The Wire. Scorsese's name alone brings in a large audience. Not to mention the fact that it set an HBO record for ratings.

Kind of slow but there are setting up some very exciting storylines.
