The Combine (not the one from Half Life) is a concept thought up by Chief Bromden in the novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Chief describes the Combine as the mechanical aspect of society which wants everybody to be the same; to conform. Under control of the Combine, you have no individuality, and if you decide to fight against conformity, the Combine will fight back--and without the ability to tire like a human being, odds are it will eventually win.

The Combine can be seen everywhere--from politics to sports to school. Did you vote for someone in an election solely based on what the TV told you about them? Did your favorite sports team conform to the other teams by dumping tradition and building a new stadium or changing their colors to typical red (note: the color of Communism)? Do you dress odd and listen to music solely based on what the TV tells you to look like and listen to?

Or are you an individual who makes decisions on your own, who fights the Combine and will never succumb to the easy path of life by conforming with everyone else?

I love that book!  :D  We read it in Lit last semester.  :)

Anyways, I try not to pay attention to if I'm with or against The Combine.  I just do what I want.  :)

The idea of conforming has been played out recently. It seems that if you are a "non-conformist" you are ironically conforming to an ideology.

I like to think that for the greater part, I do make decisions based only from my own thoughts, and not influenced by the media or any other outside influence.
