I think music has gone straight down the john if you ask me... I personaly think that the rock is nothing but hard guitar riffs with a lor of distortion. I'm a huge classic rock fan and when you compare Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Pete Townshend to some of the stuff out there today, it doesn't even have a fighting chance. Not to mention the talking rhythmically genre that they call "rap". I really don't even consider rap a genre anymore. It's gotten so bad. What do you guys think. Do you think with a little bit of luck you can become a rock star?

mainstream music in general is just horrid. it's all about the money. you got all these lousy rock bands who sound, like you said, distorted. but on top of that aren't any good as they use the same chords and riffs in every song. mainstream rap of course is nothing compared to the qaulity underground stuff, and then there's the pop scene. where pretty much anyone can succeed if they have enough money or the manager invests enough money in them. it's no wonder i listen exclusively to underground music.

Yeah I know what you mean. I shouldn't just say TODAY'S music. I have listened to some underground rock and I found some pretty good bands that don't scream and they actually have talent.

There's qualityalbums coming out in Hip-Hop's underground. Mainstream is 90% BS. But still, the general quality of Hip-Hop overall has declined.

You have the internet. That alone gives music an edge to continue to expand especially since you can have access to songs and albums (legally or illegally) from artists that would never get play on the radio. The 'good' music is out there for you to find and it's only your fault when you make the statement "What's happened to music today?"

I think modern music is great. I mean, yes there is a lot of.... bad music, mainly in mainstream. But in today's age, I think independant music has been getting big. And with the technology of the internet, more musicians are getting exposure. So I think there are some great bands and musicians out today, you just need to know where to look.

mainstream=horrible (i had a tiny bit of faith left in it, but after soldier boy, i think someone should kill off the majority of the bands out there)

there are still some amazing bands out there, i'd recmomend Opeth, Nightwish, Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica

Depends. There's not a whole lot of enjoyable music when you're looking at the mainstream, but there's lots of good music out there, you just have to put some effort into finding it.

 a hilarious answer to a blunt post.

I'm not a fan of LoG, but seriously, neither am I a fan of elitists. Since nu metal is dead, they have moved on to bashing metalcore. They don't realize there's mediocre/generic music in every genre, and their music can be deemed just that as well.

Music died back when the industry killed the Alt scene in the mid-late 90s by labels rerouting money into these "idols" and "boy bands" while not giving real musicians the money they needed to tour and to put together tight productions. That's one of the main reasons why the Pumpkins broke up.

I take it you're a rock fan, TC. All hope is not lost...great rock bands with great guitarists still exist...look to the White Stripes, RHCP for a start.

But I agree, the rock of the 60s and 70s was pretty damn good.

In compassion to "yesterday's" music? Different style, same quality.

Majority of mainstream music has always been about having instant gradification and shallow rythm and beat--- to say is not is being blind to the technical truth of the matter, as far as I am concerned.

I believe music is at it's most inventive level in history, as it can draw from all that has come before it. Artists seem to continually find new methods of reinventing the musical wheel, though it's unfortunate that most of these artists don't find mainstream success. But if you bother to dig around you'll find the most eclectic and inventive artists around these days. I see no reason for the creativity well to dry up ever, people will only find new styles and push more boundaries in years to come.

I'm sick of people not liking modern music. Most of these modern music haters don't give modern band a chance and just look at the very popular bands and assume every other modern band sucks.

Depends on what you mean by today. There are thousands of great modern artists out there, most people either don't care enough about music or don't have the time to look for them. Note that modern does not equate to popular. There are a couple good artists who have come into popularity, but most of the good stuff isn't typically on TV or non-College radio.

Most mainstream blows, allthough you do get a few good bands now and then like Muse who get popular.

There is still great music being made. Hell, when you actually search for new music you find plenty of stuff that is much better than classic stuff. The Gret cold Distance by Katatonia, Reroute to Remain by In Flames, Stabbing the Drama by Soilwork, Figure #5 by Soilwork, and Miss Machine by The Dillinger Escape plan are just some of the great cd's that have come out in the last few years.

Well it's slightly unfair to compare some of recorded music bust gutiar players to today since that's a high bar. I think the mainstream tends to always befilled with a fair about of crap, and that every good once in a while good artist, but what you have to understand is now more then ever record companys are making what I like to call, "Here for Today & Gone Tommorow" music which is hurting music harshly. But you know Hendrix was much a chart person he was underground to you know. And as for hip hop the only good stuff is underground since money as taken it over.

Gang Starr have a track called "Here Today Gone Tomorrow" which deals with the exact same subject. It came out in 91 just when the record companies were sussing Hip-Hop out and putting the screws on.

"Coz they'll take a dud talking crud and they'll push him, but in the next year someone new will just sqoosh him, coz when you sellout to appeal to the masses, you have to go back and enroll in some c.lasses."

Indie/Alternative Rock is doing really well in the UK just now but I wonder how long it will be before that goes pear shaped too.
