In no particular order...

The Pope's Exorcist. It was kind of fun, almost action-movie quality but still horror. It wasn't a great movie but it was just...fun. A lot of horror is very dreary, a lot of horror is comedy...very little horror manages to be, I don't know, somewhere else.

The First Omen. Really good horror movie, nailed the sort of gothic Catholic vibe I enjoy about the sub-genre. If you want to read into it a bit more, it's a really good social commentary on female rights and bodily autonomy. Pretty rough at times, but also kind of necessary to see.

Smile (1 and 2). Wow wow wow. Such a good series. Really caught me off guard since it was hyped so much, but it's such a powerful film series about conveying trauma. A lot of nuance about how we suffer trauma, but also how we pass it on generationally. Also a pleasant 1-2 punch where both the original and sequel are really good.

Evil (series). A really good series about a trio of investigators--a skeptic techie, a rational psychologist, and a devout priest--that go around proving/disproving demonic possessions and then resolving them. The thing I like about it most is it somehow manages to blend whimsy with psychological aspects (you're never really sure if the characters are actually experiencing the things they see) with the sort of traditional Catholic "deep state" apparatus that the church has some secret level to it.

Abigail. Pretty creepy vampire movie. Nothing special, but of the horror movies I've seen in the last few years this one comes to mind as just a nice, solid, not-too-serious but not-too-unserious horror movie.

I've never had a movie trigger my fear response. Guess I'm just jaded.

However, I find the last few minutes of this absolutely terrifying, no matter how many times I watch it:

I loved The Pope's Exorcist and Evil. I'm so sad that Evil had to end. Fingers crossed that Netflix or another channel/streaming service picks it up. 🤞

@one_plum: I was considering Midsommar because it's a well-made, effective horror film, but I refrained from it... because it was a little too effective on disturbing me. Lol

Most recent one I've seen and enjoyed is Talk to Me. I tried watching The Pope's Exorcist but couldn't get into it. I re-watched Bone Tomahawk and enjoyed that, but it's from 2015.

Honestly, have a hard time thinking of modern horror movies I like.

The closest that comes to mind is Let The Right One In and that was 2008.

That's a good question since I love horror films. I guess the best one I've seen is Terrifier 3, but that is more gore than horror. Either way it was pretty good, and they helped bring forth his character and made a small attempt at making it more scary and not just brutally gory.

I'll take some from this thread and watch a few.

It's a very good movie. It's currently on Netflix, but I watched it beforehand. My sister introduced me to that movie.

@uninspiredcup: Let the Right One In, ahh that's an excellent one.

I thought about including that one, but didn't think it was "recent" enough to include. But nonetheless great choice.
