...if you subscribe for only $10/month.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/watch-youtube-videos-with-no-ads-for-10month-start/1100-6431599/

Well, my thought was basically "Adblock", but Hulu does a good job of preventing Adblock from circumventing it. I'm guessing YouTube will be next to force that. They'll also likely ramp up ads to twist our arms into paying the ransom.

So, where do we go from here?

I'm honestly amazed Hulu is still somehow in business.

@topgunmv: It's a decent alternative to cable. I don't sub to it personally, but I can definitely see the appeal.

As long as we can skip ads and they aren't pretentious, I'm ok.

I'll still be using adblock on chrome though.

The majority of ads have the 4 -5 second in skip option. A lot of the older vids I view have no advert. Not sure about this, but it seems like Youtube do it on session run. IE, I watch five music vids that are related, the first has an ad, the following four don't, or very rarely. New content gets hit the worst, and stands to reason that revenue accrued would be greater there. Sub free is just a marketing gimmick in this case. A online radio station yeah because they pay their end.

I have faith in ad-block, so there's no way in hell I'm giving up on it.

Adblock is free and reliable for me and ads aren't that big of a deal breaker these days. T.V Ads however back in the days now.

Adblock works fine for me on Youtube so you could say at this point it's a stupid tax.

I've never had a big problem with ads on youtube... I don't know why anyone would do this. Maybe it's my ad blocker...

Totally agree. It's next-day stuff, that's why.

As for YouTube Red, they couldn't have picked a worse name.. (RedTube anyone?...). In any case, obtrusive ads are the bane of my existence, and I don't trust a company that makes me the product, so I can't ever imagine paying for YTRed.

sorry to be the voice of dissent, but ads keep content free/free-ish.

They are a necessary evil. Not only to they provide revenue for the provider, but in many cases they provide revenue for the content creator as well. I Was raised in a pre-internet society where I had to watch 9 minutes of commercials for every 21 minutes of content; being able to skip the ad after ten seconds is still a luxury to me.
