Well you should definitely have the player advance through a set of different locations that require you to implement different survival techniques along the way.For instance, maybe a farm outside a a small village which is located far from a major city or something like that. Also have a day/night cycle to test the players survival skills.xxDustmanxxYa, Im trying to redefine "survival" horror. Where the progress relies completely on the player to quite literally survive. Not go through a linear story, not solve puzzles. Though there will be a deep story and puzzles, the key to teh game is surviving. Much like the key to GTA is the freedom in your rampages across the city, so will be the "freedom" of your surivial during this crisis.

a wax museum would be interesting. maybe a mannequin factory, mannequin parts slowly moving around conveyor belts could add some confusion and tension to the mix. PoedonOhh nice idea! Especially the museum thing. The field museum in chicago just begs to be put into a zombie game. A zoo would also be interesting since there are indoor exhibits as well as large outdoor areas. Fighting zombie lions and giraffes also sounds awesome.

I think a school, gym, nearby farmlands, police stations, churches especially, a carnival, and then just standard suburbia and city shops. I just want more just in case I miss anything to really make the story as complete as possible.

Poedonthats a good one, reminds me of condemned where your going through the department store. definately a good way to add some suspense with zombies and dark shadows.
you should go for a RTS or FPS where YOU are the zombie and you collect minions... there dont seem to be enough of that... plus add lots of humor. make it seem like you are the zombie, you are the good guy :)
and as for location, i guess a nice huge mansion. and maybe for once, have it be a nice place. like a very nice place. not ruined or anything. after all, the zombies deserve to be put in the spotlight for being nice guys for once... at least one zombie.
How about a deranged rich guy uses his power after the aftermath of the outbreak to train zombie servants for his mansion to keep it clean. But really he's insane, and he begins desriign to be like his zombie servants and begins to feed on flesh liek them whilst still technically human and alive. Slowly he devours the human servants he used to train the zombie servants and the ratio becomes quite heavily to the zombie side (of course :P). Thats where you come in and kick some major zombie and deranged rich guy butt.you should go for a RTS or FPS where YOU are the zombie and you collect minions... there dont seem to be enough of that... plus add lots of humor. make it seem like you are the zombie, you are the good guy :)

you should read World War Z- I bet you could steal a million ideas from that book (by Max Brooks).ThaSodalready have, and zombie survival guide which he also wrote. Really funny how much sense it makes. I've seen every zombie movie out there (even the horrid sci-fi channel ones). In fact Im really in love with zombies, so much so in fact I tattooed a zombie bite on my right side of my torso.
awesome tattoo :D
I've got an idea for a place. A run down ghetto, think about how awesome it would be, run down houses, ruined streets, completely silent with no signs of movement ever until you watch something stumble out of an alleyway.
Im not racist but when I think ghetto I think black people. Which really works of course! Black people and zombies go hand in hand. And theres nothing like the typical black hero saving his 'hood' from a zombie outbreak. Gangsta zombies, hooker zombies abound!!! Pull out your shotgun, its hunting season.awesome tattoo :D

....Sure! :D
Oh and you totally need to include a burning building of some sort as a level.

Well your gonna start the game off with the city completely fine, then you play through the outbreak as the city slowly gets overrun by the zombie horde. So imagine high speed chases with zombies chasing down random pedestrians as cars slam into each other and flip over and explode. Clinging to your car as you turn a corner and getting dragged for a few feet or so. Fires breaking out, riots breaking out from the confusion, viglantes, cultists......the works.[QUOTE="Juggernaut140"][QUOTE="acidBURN1942"][QUOTE="Juggernaut140"]Im not racist but when I think ghetto I think black people. Already been done in the video for Thriller, by Michael Jackson. It's hard to think of a 1980's MJ video realistically being in the "hood," but it's been done.
BTW, want a realistic survival horror game? Just do a 1990's south central L.A. compton without the zombies. People can be scary enough...

I'm currently writing a zombie story for a future video game project. I'm trying to draw and design the city I want it to take place in and Im just wondering what everyone thought were some "iconic" locations for a zombie to infest...like a police station. Whats NEEDS to be somewhere that a zombie game or movie should be.
acidBURN1942
honestly, a farm setting would be cool, an airport setting would be cool, a hospital setting would be cool. All those have awesome things to work with, are large, and very capable of zombie stories. Trust me, I know the spots for zombies(as I had the same Idea as you when I was younger, but I actually created a storyline, drew up the locations, and the characters) its fun stuff!
Well if your looking for "iconic" locations, locations that have been done to death then the story won't be very original. You need something fresh, something new....like a beach resort! How about this: Zombies Infest Nudists Colony!! Sounds like gaming gold to me.elblanquito_81
Dead Island is coming out later this year and it's set at a island resort.

just dont do a mansion, police station or a underground lab and i think youll be okay
How about things like moral choices?
Like say another group of survivors is trying to get supplies and is ambushed by zombies. Do you jump in and save them and run the risk of supplies being consumed very quickly, or let them die and keep all the supplies for yourself? I would love a zombie game with choices like this.
[QUOTE="Elraptor"]Cemeteries always go down well. Premier1101
defiently, if he wants his game to be a Thriller :P
i can totally see that happening. you are to save nice zombies that just want to dance, but theya are being forced to be evil. and as you save each one, they join your side, and at the end when you win, you'll leave the city in a car and all the zombies will wave at you as a ICBM comes falling on their heads, but their necks are so strained they dont look up and never knew :'( sad ending that will definately catch the hearts of all those who play and it will win best story of the year.
Sounds pretty cool, only I suggest NOT using iconic locations. Or at least, don't use too many. Try something new..like an office building! I've always thought it be cool to see zombies wandering around in cubicles, and you'd have to jump over said cubicles to escape them. Also, a tower would be cool. Chuck dem zombies out of plate glass windows! :DTheZ3nMan
i can totally see a situation where all these employees become zombies unknowingly (like warcraft 3), and they're just moving on with their lives not knowing they are zombies until you come in with guns. then you'll steal some important documents that you think may be their plans for world domination but it turns out they are just tomorrow's itinerary, and they want you to know but their screams are misinterpreted into angry yelps, and because of these misunderstadings, they come after you and you get to throw them out the window.
