So, the EVGA superclocked 8600GTS is 720MHZ with 2ghz memory, XFX 8600 GTS XXX is 730mhz and 2.26Ghz memory, and BFG's 8600GTS OC is 710mhz and 2Ghz memory. All are $230. Should I go with XFX because the better statistics? Or does this not matter?

if you know how to overclock, its much better to go with a stock and do the overclock yourself, that's what you are really paying for with overclocked cards. It doesn't matter, as those cards aren't really good anyways.

The level of performance difference told me to stay away from the 8600s completely.  8800GTS it was!  I suggest you do the same.

YES!!!  The 880GTS will be a much better card for a little more money.

The 8600 benchmarks were a joke.  When I first saw them a week ago or so ago, I couldn't help but think what a waste of money they are when you can spend a little more cash for ALOT more performance.........

well in my case i don't have the necessary case space or psu for a 8800, so for ppl like me the price difference actually becomes quite big, $80 difference between 8600gt and cheapest 8800 gts, $60 to buy a new PSU, and $50 to buy a new case.

Why would you need a new case? That is a common misconception by lots of people.

The 8800GTS is about  2" longer then the 8600GT

Now the PSU, yes you might need a new one but you should have/want a decent 400w PSU anyways.

I agree that the 8800 is much better, but he clearly isnt interested in one, so why doesnt someone just answer his question? I would, but I dont know the answer.

He hasn't even responded to the thread, so how do you know he isn't interested in one?

Then get the best one there is and stick with it. The best would be the 8800, but eitherway, you will have to choose someday or wait forever, now you don't want to do that, right? :)

Those current benchmarks were a joke, but I am curious to see how it performes when DX10 cards are released.  The card has the potential to do a lot better than it is with DX10 games.  However, by the time we see DX10 games on the market ATI and Nvidia will have already replaced the card with something else in that price point.

Now does nvidia really plan to make a lot of money off these cards when you've got the 8800GTS priced so closely with a major performance gain

Sorry, I was traveling, and didn't get back to this post till now.

Interesting info here - nVidia has done a really poor job of telling a clear story with thier GPU product line.

I am so confussed over which card to get, that all I have done is not get one!!!

Is there like a chart, in which all the card from nVidia or ATI, are benched marked on one machine with the same base, so you can see each cards benchmark on that base system, and its retail price.

That way you can see how each card compaires to the other cards, and you can pick the performance you want for the price.

I think such a list would really help things out.

I know nVidia and ATI would not want such a list, becasue they couldn't pull a fast one on us like the 8800 Ultra.

how is it a little more cash? 8800gts is double the cost of a 8600GT and so it makes sense it performs 2x better.

i hardly think 8600gt performances are a joke, a power efficient card that offers better performance than 7900gs for around $120-130, looks good to me.

Where have you seen an 8600GT outperform an 7900GS? A 7900GS usually beats a 8600GTS, let alone a GT>

I really don't know which card is better???? but heres what i get with my 8600GT.

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25698466

If someone with a 7900gs wants to post there fps, we could compare.

I got tons of games and am willing to underclock my cpu (if needed) for comparison purposes.

8600GT much better in Stalker, Oblivion, Rainbow Las Vegas.

7900GS slightly better in Supreme Commander, Battlefield 2142, and HL2 at very high resolutions.

so 8600GT tend to be much better in the newer games, and lags behind slightly in the older ones at reasonable resolutions.
