Love reading this forum. You guys are always awesome when it comes to this kind of thing. I'm going to build a new rig. This is going to be almost soley for gaming. I have a budget of $1,200 and of course would love to come in under that.

Planning to buy from newegg

This would be foreverything excepta DVD drive, which I have.
I need a monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse (doesn't need to be wireless)and Windows 7.

I would like to go Intel and have been looking at this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115073
I don't plan to overclock anything as I'm a bit of a coward when it comes to that sort of thing.

Thanks ahead of time!!!
I'm ready to buy right away and get to building (for the first time)!

For a mid range build, yes. You can upgrade it later if you want to.

You could get something like this kit:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1148895&CatId=5294
replace the psu with something like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7195036&CatId=1483
and add something like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=555358&CatId=3669

Though you can also part all that out on newegg to save at least some cash (the ram, for instance is $24.99 on newegg vs $39.99 on tiger).
It's not all the 'best of the best' but it is plenty enough for anything out.

I'm too lazy to post links. Just search newegg.com.

i5-2500K

8GB Corsair XMS DDR3

MSI P67 GD65

EVGA GTX 560Ti

750GB Western Digital Caviar Black.

Antec Nine Hundred Case

Corsair TX 650 V2 Power Supply

Came out to $936 when I added it to the basket.

Win 7 Pro for students, $29, google it. I think you just need a .edu email account.

Monitor and other stuff, I don't know. Reuse what you have if you can.

Allright, here's a complete package, everything you need, and this is taking into consideration that you say you will NOT overclock. This system will peform better than the others mentioned when left at stock speeds.

Combo deal with Case, Mobo, CPU, Ram and HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.660863&cm_sp=DIY_PC_Combos-_-660863-_-Combo 433,99$

Powersupply CM 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171052 79,99$

GPU Evga GTX 570 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130621 329,99$

This is the computer itself, landing at 843,97$ without counting any rebates and you get a free game with the GPU

Windows 7 Home premium 64bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986 99,99$

Keyboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823334002 18,99$

Mouse Logitech G500 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104318 50,99$

Monitor Acer S231 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009255 159,99$

Speakers Logitech Z523 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121036 84,99$

Total: 1258,92$ without rebates counted in

Little curious on the RAM issue. It seems like the price difference between 4GB and 8GB isn't much. Not knowing a whole lot about how PC games actually use the RAM am I not going to see any real difference?

Do you think the i5-2500 will be going down in price any? I'm not too excited about the new AMD stuff and Intel isn't releasing anything really new till next year? Or do I have that wrong?

AMD's FX Series will be very, very cheap: the six-core FX-6100 (i.e. three Bulldozer modules) clocked at 3.3GHz, with a Turbo Core boost to 3.9GHz, will retail for just $155. The eight-core (four-module) FX-8120, clocked at 3.1GHz and boosted to 4GHz, will retail for $185 and the 3.6GHz/4.2GHz FX-8150 will retail for $230

As well as the 2700k releasing around the same time, you will see a definite price drop with the 2500k!!

Ah! Well see that's why I lurk these forums. I'll need to get this thing built before mid October as after that I'll be swamped till January with the holiday rush. But that gives me some time to wait for sure.

Not seeing anything impressive out of the early AMD 'reviews' and frankly I don't want to wait to get this baby up and running. I am thinking of bumping my budget up another hundred bucks so I can get 8 GB of ram etc.

So for $1,300 anyone got another build lol. I waited too long and most of those builds include items that are now sold out on New Egg. =/

I'm sure the case you linked would be satisfactory, but don't you think he should up the value considering what he's stuffing in there? With his budget he may as well be looking at the haf932 or the storm sniper

The CM 690-II is one of the best reasonably-priced cases available for people with single GPU setups. :? I see no need to spend more money on a case when I can personally attest to the spaciousness, quality, and cooling capabilities of this one.

:O I did not know that, oopsies lol. But, i was thinking for the purpose of future proofing perhaps he should get a tank of a case so he can SLI/xfire later on.

Not the worst idea if he thinks that's a possiblity down the road... But then he should change his motherboard too, and possibly the PSU. At that point we start going over the $1300 mark. For $1200 including an OS, monitor, KB, and mouse the build is pretty efficient without really cutting corners. The thing that I didn't include in the build that I should've is speakers. So that might put us over $1300 even with the case and mobo that I included.

Looks solid to me. I will need to toss it all in basket and see what the total is. But you don't think i will have any heating issues with that card and build right? I see a lot of the reviewers on newegg saying the card runs very hot. I'm just worried since this is my first time building and i don't want to fry anything.

You'll be fine! I'm sure the cooling will work out fine. But, riiiight... I made that remark about getting a haf x after i made a build which added up to 1360$ with alll the bells and whistles still there.. then i looked back and saw there wasn't a motherboard.. So good call with the case rofl.
