my max resolution is 1440 x 900. What would be an ideal GPU that would play games at high settings using this resolution?

How about a GTX 560 Ti? It should be getting pretty cheap by now.

Hd 7850 will be plenty of bang. Itll max out everything at that resolution and enough for a monitor upgrade down the road.

This one looks good. What kind of power supply would be suffiecient for this type of GPU?

My wife uses a 550Ti sc at 1440x900. It does ok.

I would say a 460 or a 6850/7770 would be ok for that res (if you don't plan on getting a new monitor soon)

At least $60-70 psu with 80% efficiency. 500w is plenty for the new cards even with overclocking. ~600-700w if you ever plan on a dual card setup. If you have already have a decent one in the wattage range I stated than it should be good, post a link here to double check.

Cosair, enermax, seasonic, silverstone are good brands. Don't cheap out, mines lasted for 4 years going 5, so is worth splurging.

If I get a 7850, will I have to upgrade anytime soon? Say in 2 years?

At that resolution it would, but if you intend to upgrade the display than a beefier gpu maybe better. In retrospect 6850/70 is still around from 2 years ago.

Just so you know you can hookup the rig to a hdtv with a ps3/x360 controller, it'll gaming like a bawss.

My son uses a gtx460(256bit version) and he currently games on a 20in HP monitor that is the same resolution. All his games run great. It is a bit hard to find one of those cards now. I was thinking about getting him another one for SLI but theyre a bit scarce. I would just get him a higher end card later but he really loves that Nvidia card! Lol

Yep. I have twin boys and one has a 460 and the other has a 6850. Those cards seem damn near identical in performance.

Lol GTX 460 at 1440 x 900?

I use an overclocked GTX 460 at 1920 x 1080 and it runs like a champ! i haven't had a single problem running the newest games. Anything above the GTX 460 should be fine for you.

There's some definite overkill suggestions from a bunch of the above posts, 1440 x 900 isn't that high of a res. You'll be fine with a 460 or a 6850 or higher.
