Ok here's the deal.

I leave for college in a month. I have about 1,500$ to put into this computer. Also need a monitor, decent one. The computer is basically just for gaming (aside from typing papers). I'm pretty much noob to this, but it's something i've always wanted to do. Im guessing i'll be going with the E8400, or would it be worth going for the E8500 for the extra 20$??Anyways, basically leaving it up to who ever has the knowledge about this. Will be building it based of what you say.

Would really appreciate the help, thanks.

Alot of the reviews i have seen on g.skill aren't too good. Clearly you say different cause you're telling me to get that, jw why g.skill rather than ocz or corsair.

Also, rather than a 22" screen, would it make more sense to save on that some and put more into the computer itself. Or would a screen size smaller ruin the view?

It'd be a real shame to have a 4870 and not have a monitor good for 1680x1050. You can go a little smaller and still maintain that resolution, but the savings would be negligible until you dropped to something 1440x900 around 19".

G.Skill are one of the best RAM manufacturers out there. Check their ratings (for the one I linked and other models on newegg) OCZ or Crucial are ok but sometimes too expensive for the timings they give you, Corsair is abominable. They let convicted pedophiles and Billy Bob Thorton do the QC checks at the Corsair factory.

Your build needs serious help. It's both underpowered and overpriced [for the crappy hardware it includes]. If it's going to take you years to afford that you need to rethink your priorities. But let's not hijack Snow2Day's thread.

Vista hasn't had extensive errors since like the 1st week or so when driver support caught up. With the addition of SP1 Vista is the superior OS for a multitude of reasons.

Ok so really then a 22" is very noticably different, but does it lag much more? or will all of this support it enough to not be glitchy?(considering the resolution size)

Still very iffy on the vista because of my lack of knowledge with mostof this, its going to be complicated enough already.

Do you personally use that ram? or is it just a reference. I really like the way this is set up.

I have a different model of 2x2GB G.Skill RAM, that is a bit more expensive in one computer, and that exact same pair of sticks in my backup computer.

They actually just dropped or are doing a sale on the price it so maybe it'd be a good buy too as it's currently only $5 more.

A 4870 will run great on a 22" 1680x1050 monitor. If you had something bigger that was running 1920x1200 like a 24"+ monitor then you might want the new HD4870X2 coming out shortly at about $550 or so. Or a Geforce GTX280 at $450.

Well it's not a hugely significant improvement, but then $5 isn't much either. I wasted that much on a scratch ticket this morning.

8800GT for instance is cheaper... And if you ony are putting $1 a month towards a new computer you are going to have a hundred years to revise your list over and over.

This is very true ha. Well most of the parts seem pretty good, and i am probably going to build something close to that. Maybe change the controller panel and monitor. I love the blue glow. How many fans do you think it would need? or would the two front ones be enough(Doubtful)

The Antec 900 comes with two 120mm on the front, one 120mm on the back, and a 200mm on the top. You'd just need one more 120mm for the otherwise empty side panel fan mount

Considering he is a canadian, I'm going to go ahead and assume that the period there is intended to be a comma, which would still be wrong, but point being, I'm pretty sure that he means $100. And consider that these are canadian dollar prices we're talking about, but I would agree that he could get better for less. Just thought I'd point that out. To the OP, the suggested builds are all great, and you will be happy with whatever you choose. My somewhat cheaper computer is going to be completed tomorrow when the rest of my packages arrive from newegg...I'm very excited.

Your build needs serious help. It's both underpowered and overpriced [for the crappy hardware it includes]. If it's going to take you years to afford that you need to rethink your priorities. But let's not hijack Snow2Day's thread.

I only put $1.00 towards my new computer every month, but the hardware Is decent for the price*cough*Canadian prices*cough*.

I hope your joking, or you need to get out of pc gaming, 7600gt for 162 hahahahahahahahaha and 1 dollar a month I know thats a joke right there, dont give people build info ever.

I don't see a problem here. The TC saves money while having a decent rig.

Just no

His build features a dual core, an inferior videocard with half the VRAM and an inferior hard drive all for the same price as my build. Your money though.

You can overclock the Q6600 to 3-3.6Ghz with that motherboard I listed and it's also a quad core CPU. Games will feature support for Quad Core CPU's soon enough so that e8400 is not nearly as future proof. A 2.6Ghz Quad is more than enough for any game out today btw. You'll also be able to decode/encode music/videos a lot faster and it's also better at multitasking.

The hard drive I listed is almost on par with the WD Velociraptor hard drive which costs around 300 dollars and I'm pretty sure is either the fastest or one of the fastest hard drives on the market today.

Trust me, the specs I provided is a lot better and more future proof which is perfect for a College student like yourself.

I'm pretty sure he didn't think I meant that the CPU would last forever. I just wanted to point out that a Q6600 would be best since it'll be able to handle games that make use of multi-core CPU's a lot better than an e8400 would. The e8400 and Q6600 costs about the same so why bother buying a dual core when he can grab a sweet quad core? If he's ever bored, he can overclock the Q6600 to 3+ Ghz.

He'll have to pay a premium on an average Core i7 motherboard, 300+ dollars for the "low end" model and 160+ dollars on 4GB's of ram which isn't a whole lot faster than DDR2 ram. He can also say goodbye to a GTX 280.

millerlight89, his price range is 1500. Pretty sure he'll go over that limit with a Core i7 based PC.

TC, Best Buy is currently selling the 4870x2 for 469.99. On sale. Order the parts I listed but instead of a GTX 280, buy the 4870x2. You'll have yourself a gaming monster!

Alright just waking up now this morning. Thanks for all the feedback everyone. So i was following your discussion of a dual vs a quad and i still dont really understand why your pushing the Q6600, why not just egt a E8400 and not overclock? Not sure if i mention this but impretty new to most so overclocking isnt something id be doing RIGHT away, i need to understand more about computers and such before i risk breaking it you know?

Basically just want a comparison between the Q6600 and the E8400, why one will benifit more than another.

And as for future proof.. ehh its whatever. I figure i will need a few new parts in a year or two anyways. Even a stock dell computer finds a way to s*** the bed after the first month if you touch anything. Upgrades can be made later. Just looking for something that will last a decent amount of time.

It's pretty much given that a new Q6600 will reach ~3ghz on stock voltage, with a decent motherboard. The Q6600 at 3ghz will outperform the E8400 at 4ghz with quad core apps that scale well on multiple cores, and those are growing. Slowly but we'll get there :) The E8400 is far better for current apps where they're only dual core as at the same frequency, it'll outperform the Q6600 in dual core apps. I don't think anyone would flame you for either choice, personally though, I have a Q6600 at 3.4ghz with a minor voltage raise and I'm happy with it.

YOu can have your friend help you OC. With the motherboard that I listed, all you would have to do is raise the FSB and leave everything else at stock in the bios. In other words, it's VERY easy to overclock the Q6600 with the motherboard I listed. You can have a friend help you out whenever you feel the need to overclock.

About the e8400, you can overclock it all you want but it will NEVER feature 4 CPU cores. A 2.6Ghz Q6600 is more than enough for any application today like I stated before, you can always overclock it to 3+ Ghz whenever you feel the need.

So more or less when i do decide to start overclocking the Q6600 is going to be the one better for it because the upcomming programs are made more for it rather than the E8400? What about the E8500 with 3.16GHz

By the time any games make a real use for quad core, there'll be something out there way better and more worth your money to buy. So the only real reason to get a q6600 is if your multitasking alot.

There's already a few games and programs that make use of quad cores. Far Cry 2, Crysis Warhead, Alan Wake all make use of quads as well.

Btw, he's going to be going off to college and probably won't have cash to spend on constant upgrades. A quad core will last him a lot longer than a dual core would.

I suggest you purchase the Vistiontek 4870x2 from www.bestbuy.com. It's on sale for 469.99 which is a steal.

Visiontek cards feature lifetime warranties. The 4870x2 is a lot faster than a GTX 280 and at times, faster than 2 GTX 280's in SLI. The GTX 280 runs Crysis better than the 4870x2 but I'm sure Crysis Warhead will have different results since it's a lot more optimized compared to the original.

4870x2 much better than gtx280 price/performance wise. It's a dual GPU so technically comparing the 2 is like a 2vs1.

I'm in a very similar position to the TC's. Do you think a rig that is SLI or crossfire capable worth it for me? Or a rig that will hanld just a single 4870 or 280.

I think getting a 4870 x2 isn't worth it. You can get a visiontek 4870 (1x) for just $264 after rebate. And it can run crysis on high at a good resolution.
