I'll be getting a new laptop soon, thinking about an HP DV5 1170... I'm also considering the 17 inches version (DV7), but in order for the 9600m GT to be fit for gaming as long as possible, I'm currently inclined to get the 15.4 inches (lower resolution = better performance).

MMO's are kind of my favorite genre though, and I'm wondering whether that kind of screen would be too small.

Advices? THX

PS: Not considering getting a laptop with 9800GT or similar, my budget does not allow that, so pls don't advise to wait and get that.

Honestly theres no big differences in Performance between that and 17 inch Monitor. I have a 9600gt on a 17inch Monitor so I'm playing at 1280x1024 Res. and when turning it down to 1024x768 I get almost the same fps maybe a half to 1fps more. So I would go with a 17inch Monitor.

Actually, the DV7 has a 1440x900 screen... Do you think the performance will not change significantly?I currentyl have a 17 inches with crappy GPU, and playing LOTRO I have a considerable difference in FPS between 1440x900 and 1280x800...

It is perfectly fine for a laptop.. I have the exact same screen size and resolution.. Runs games liek WoW and it looks great.. Honestly I would not get a 1440x900 screen.. 1280 x 800 is more then enough imo, if it doesn't suit a person you can turn up AA.. IN the end why I say this is for LCD's specially for laptops in my experience is the lower the max/native resolution the better.. Because due to the technology of LCD's you have to stay at the native resoultion which is usually the max.. If you don't it will stretch or crunch pixels to where it will look awful no matter how much bells and whistles.. For LCD's resolution means everything.. 1440x900 is great too but the lower res imo makes it more future proof because the performanc eboost you may get form the lower res will help you play newer MMO's.. And I have both types of reoslution on two differnet laptops.. I don't notice much of a difference in all honesty.

I think this may be fine for you siafni considering the video card you are talking about, but I did want to correct the above quote. Resolution has a huge effect on FPS. If its not effecting your fps all that means is that you have some other limiting factor. If you can't play a game in a screens native resolution and scale it back it won't look as good as the same resolution on a smaller screen, where it is native. Just so you know I am not blowing smoke PC gamer did an article on picking a screen size in their 2007 pc building bible, where they made this exact point.

The bigger the resolution the better, it makes it a lot easier if you can see everything.
