Ok so i was having a nose about Dell and saw this 16GB DDR2 667 Quad Channel FBD Memory (4x4GB) [add £1,340.00 or £43/month1] in the customize section. I just though why? I mean why would you need that much RAM full stop, can someone please explain.

yep, many IT admins are virtualizing server boxes, especially those with low loads, and high levels of ram are necessary to run those. Also many other server apps, like exchange(email) use up significant amounts of ram.

Running a bunch of VM's each with the maximum amount of RAM that they can support (i.e. four 32-bit OS VM's with ~4GB of RAM to each). Enough RAM to store raw 1080p video for encoding/rendering. Because they can have it?

thats RAM for a xeon cpu first of all most likely for a workstation machine, the reason why the price is inflated so much is because of the whole INTEL discorvering that they could charge more to a companies... but i wont get into thats its a long story.

They have 4x4GB for desktops too

4x2GB is totally usable for Windows Vista. Vista will use about as much RAM as you throw at it.

So I am sure 4x4GB would be fine. RAM is so cheap, you better be putting at least 4GB in for new systems. And I would suggest 2x2GB not 4x1GB so you can upgrade to 4x2GB later. Now if you have XP, then 8GB isn't going to made as much of a difference, but 4GB is starting to be standard now.

Mac Pros are configurable to up to 32 GB (8 x 4 GB DDR2).
