Currently I game on 1680x1050 resolution with my XFX 9800 GT since that's the native resolution of my LCD monitor. If I were to buy one of those 22" Full HD 1920x1080 monitors being sold and switched to 1920x1080 resolution would I suffer very significant degradation in game performance for the games I play?

While we're talking about 1920x1080 gaming, in your honest opinion, what video card would be the absolute minimum for decent a gameplay experience at the 1920x1080?

If it helps at all, here are my pertinent PC details:

E7300 Intel C2D

Asus P5QL-Pro

XFX 9800 GT

4Gb OCZ DDR2 800mhz RAM

Windows XP SP3

250Gb Seagate HD

FSP 600w Epsilon PSU

Well for ur 1st question,

Yes there will be a bit of performance loss, is the 9800GT u have 512 or 1GB, you will need to look at 1GB for a minimum now, higher resolution means gpu is more stressed.

You might also not be able to run games on high anymore with the 9800GT, also AA and AF will need to be reduced, the demands are too much for maximum grafics.

For ur 2nd question,

I do game at 1920*1200 (a tad bit higher, on a 24"), and currently I have 260 (216) in SLI (its 896MB but putting them together helps). At the moment I would say the minimum is the GTS250 1GB version.

Hope that helps, enjoy ur new monitor.

Going from a 9800 GT to a 9800GTX+ wouldn't that much of an upgrade. Consider at least a 4870\GTX 260

Yep, I was looking at those GTX 260s on newegg and tigerdirect. While I don't plan on upgrading my vid card just yet (maybe during the holiday season to get some discounts or price-cuts), what resolution should/can i play on if i want to maintain the level of gaming performance my XFX 9800 GT (512mb) gives me when i game on 1680x1050 while using one of those 22" Full HD 1920x1080 monitors?

I have a factory overclocked 512MB HIS 4850 and run all my games at 1920 x 1080 (if supported) normally at max settings. The only exception so far - somewhat surprisingly - has been Company of Heroes, which requires me to turn down 2 of the settings from 'Ultra' to 'High' for optimised frame rates. Otherwise I play mostly everything at maximum detail at this native resolution with my Q8200 - 4GB DDR3 - Win 7 RC1 x86 - 22" HD LCD machine. At a guess, based on your GPU I'd say you'd be fine. It's not that much of a resolution jump. If you're unsatisfied, perhaps then you can consider upgrading your video card. But a bigger monitor and the higher resolution offered is generally a great upgrade and I honestly don't think you'll suffer major performance decreases.

Thanks for the reply! I'm merely planning ahead of time for my holiday season spending and I'm still pretty much on the fence between a new vid card w/ a new Full HD monitor or a Playstation 3 so I can play Fight Night 4, Tekken 6, MGS4, Heavy Rain, Soul Calibur 4, UFC 2009. I wish those games I mentioned would just come to the PC, but I don't see that happening ever.
