Looking to game at 1920 x 1200 resolution on a 24" monitor.

What would be best for me at that resolution:

ATIOR Nvidia

I previously thought the 8800 GTS was better than the HD 2900 until a saw some benchmark comparisons saying otherwise.

Could anyone tell me which is better for my needs and if it's not too much trouble give some links to reliable benchmark webpages?

Thanks.

sorry but for that res you need a 8800 GTX. anything lower would be a compromise in quality, ati currently cant run that res as good as the gtx.

I'm on a budget, but how much will those cost when they get released (or is that still unknown)?

nope, they are high-mid ranged cards and neither will beat the GTX. your best bet is to just wait for those cards which come out october 29th and november 15th respectivly, they both cost $200-250 and just get a monitor that can support 1680x1050 resolution. you will definetely feel the age of your card if you game at 1920x1200 for more than a year, its a very demanding resolution.

the 1950 is said to be around $200 and that is a pretty good price for the card.

Sounds like i may have to just get the GTX then because i really want the higher res. When's the best time to buy, you think?

well now really, you wont see a price drop or a gtx killer anytime soon so why wait.

oh and to the guy that max crysis at 1920x1200 mind you that not only is that with no AA(aa doesn't work in beta) but also in dx9 mode on high. you wont be able to do that with very high in dx10 with AA cranked all the way up.

More VRAM = better at higher resolutions. Go with the 2900.

Fun Fact: There are no more ATI cards, the 2900 is from AMD.

Good luck playing on High in DX10 at 1920x1080/1920x1200 with a 2900xt... ;)

As for the topic starter, you're gonna need a 8800 GTX to run things well at that resolution(like someone else said), especially Crysis.

The game isn't even out yet, thus making both sides of this argument totally wrong.

I'd go with the 8800GTS 640MB. nVidia's newer drivers have really improved performance from what I've heard.

Not to mention the 8800GTS is an amazing overclocker, people get it up to like 650/950 on stock cooling. :P

I did think the 8800 GTS 640MB would do the job but i'm getting the impression that it won't from this thread. I think i'll get the GTX just to be on the safe side - i just need to cut back on the hdd and wireless card and G5 mouse...

You must be pretty clueless, if you bothered to read the email you got when you signed up and go read the FAQ in the beta forums, you would see that the developers said that there's no AA...

Plus, you have a bottleneck: your CPU. It came out 2 years ago, it's a alittle outdated. I guarantee you that you can't play on High settings with DX10 at 1920x1080...

Neither.

Wait for RV670 and CrossFire two of them (RV670 should cost $200 to $250).

Actually I have heard that the 8800GT OCed is a bit faster than the GTX. I think it went like this. GTX 128sp, 575mhz core. GT 112sp, 800mhz core. how ever the GT will have a 256bit bus so it needs high mem clocks.

In the latest titles it seems like the 8800gtx isnt that far ahead of the hd2900, its not like another world altogether. You might be overestimating the gtx, unless you plan on giving it some hefty overclock, and then you would justify the premium price difference between the 640mb gts and gtx.Crysis might very well wipe out ALL current single card setupsat the very top resolutions.i think you could rule out hefty aa on max settings dx10 at 1900X1200.

With no aa or maybe even just 2x aa your in with a good shout with a 2900xt i think. AA performance makes it lookterrible but its as good as a 640 mb gts with it disabled/just a small amount. Dont forget it wasnt designed for conventional aa but for future methods of implementation. Driver revisions for DX10 are very promising. Probably has quite some potential left in it, its on catalyst 7.10 now, by the end of the year performance might have really improved (even more than it already has - can provide links if your interested). Its such a complicated GPU that its taken until now for ati to get good functionality and compatibility worked into the driver, and 7.10 is perhaps their first genuine stab at optimising performance.
