Poll 1996 / 1997 revisited: Which has the more powerful soundtrack, Diablo 1 or Quake 1? (28 votes)

Diablo (original game) 54%
Quake (original game) 25%
I have not played both of these games with their soundtracks 11%
I can't decide! Both added greatly to the experience. 11%

To me, these 2 menacing soundtracks take their dark games to the next level of atmosphere and tension. IMO they remain the 2 best soundtracks I have ever heard for a game.

Which was your favorite and had the more powerful impact on the single-player game?

Sorry the Quake soundtrack is not as clear as it could be, its great:

Diablo soundtrack - Matt Uelmen

Quake soundtrack - Trent Rezner (from Nine Inch Nails)

I liked Quake better. I'd sometimes put my Quake CD in my CD player just to play the tunes.

Oh and to me "The Catacombs" in Diablo 1 and "Castle of the Damned" in Quake are the creepiest.

"Castle of the Damned" (38:02 in video) was in the 2nd level of Quake I believe, just when you are introduced to Ogres, Fiends, and Zombies, creepy.

Strangely enough both some to have chilling-like baby cries.

I miss the late 90's for PC Gaming.

Diablo music was creepy

When the butcher comes out "fresh meat!" it almost made me shit my pants.

I tried the game out, but I just couldn't get into Diablo. And I remember having the music disabled in Quake. I don't know anything about the music from either game...

I've played D1, but never played Quake 1. However, the Quake 1 theme is pretty awesome.

Yes, the Golden Age of PC gaming was 1997 - 2000 (4 years)

It pretty much started with these 2 games: GL Quake (the graphically enhanced version of 1996's Quake that started the graphics card craze) released Jan. 1997 and Diablo, released late 1996/early 1997 (pretty much an early 1997 game that set the stage for true WRPG's like Fallout series and Baldur Gate series).

Each year from 1997 - 2000 there were at least 30 good PC games a year and 20 GREAT ones, there were 3 - 4 good PC Gaming magazines going strong, 3dfx Graphics cards were in high gear, good times. A lot of good creative games made for the PC only.

In 2001 PC games started a big decline as PS2 became quite popular and the original XBox and Gamecube were released. The best things in 2001 were the expansion packs to Diablo 2 and Baldurs Gate 2, multiplatform Max Payne, and simulation game IL-2 Sturmovik. Fortunately "Lord of Destruction" and "Throne of Bhaal" were enough to hold my interest for the year. A few good years since then, but it was never the same.

Yea, Diablo 1 had great atmosphere & music (despite the shitty click click click click gameplay) Would of loved to see a more substantial RPG in that setting. Too bad they strayed further and further away from that dark artstyle/atmosphere/music with each subsequent release, as that was the main thing going for that series in the first place.

I think that is highly debatable.....I think they both are VERY atmospheric.

Reznor all the way, the Quake soundtrack is one of my favourites. I do enjoy the Diablo soundtrack as well though.

A little bit of trivia, in Quake the nail guns ammo box has the Nine Inch Nails (NIN) symbol on it.

Strange thing is, all the times I played Quake in '97 and '98 I never noticed that.

But I played it again a couple weeks ago and noticed that right away.

Even thought Diablo has an awesome Soundtrack, NIN's Quake OST is a clear winner for me. Probably the very best (game)soundtrack there is...

Actually, Quake OST and The Downward Spiral are the albums, that made such a big NIN fan 8)
