These games both tied in my 1996 Championship Poll with 2 other games involved. Those games are gone.

Its mano-o-mano now......the fight for the year's best game: Diablo vs Quake! With new gaming vids of course! Be sure to play them in 480p, looks much much better.

Both games had a tremendous influence on multiplayer gaming and both had 2 of the most perfectly-implemented soundtracks ever, taking their games to the darkest of depths, and giving the games tons of atmosphere. Both are AAA at Gamespot, and deservedly so.

Here's a couple of good Gamespot reads:

Diablo - Greatest Games of All Timeand GS's 10 Best Game Soundtracks(kinda dissapointed they didn't include the Catacombs creepy soundtrack)

Quake - Greatest Games of All Timeand Gamespot's Choice: Best Monsters Ever

Without further ado, let the bout begin........Ding! Ding!

Diablo Gameplay Sample: Co-op multiplayer lvl 2, beating The Butcher(one of my scariest earliest moments in gaming was opening the door to The Butcher, note: The Butcher's Cleaver was also a unique item in Diablo 2)

Quake Gameplay Sample: Quake hectic gameplay sample(narrated, this guys funny, but beware the F-Bombs! Video gives a good idea of the monsters in single-player and how hectic the game can be. I still wish these videos would play the brilliant Trent Reznor soundtrack. Also, the part where the Shambler appears from nowhere down the stairs while you are going for the Lightning Gun is one of my most memorable scenes from single-player quake)

Although I loved both games, I spent an insane amount of time playing Diablo co-op.

Yes, i believe Quake was the first game to have that, also it was the first to have precision aiming, which lit the fire for multiplayer. Wasn't Quake the game to begin the modding fervor? Also, Quake was the first big game to popularize Open GL (GL Quake, stunning graphics for its time) and start the graphics proliferation we see to this day (though sadly 3dfx is long gone).

All FPS multiplayer games bow down to their grandfather Quake, the first FPS multiplayer masterpiece.

But Diablo's influence was HUGE as well, not to mention Blizzard's Battle.net. Diablo was the first game with a very complex random item and monster generator. Its top-down look was a huge influence on Bioware's Baldur's Gate series. It single-handedly re-invigorated a dying RPG genre on PC's (its incredible sales reminded RPG developers of the potential large market out there), ironically despite not even being a true RPG itself. It invented the Action RPG genre.

Quake. Diablo was fun, but it isn't nearly as complex as most RPGs, even for the time period in which it was released. Quake was a big jump for the FPS genre in so many ways.

Although Quake in itself is an amazing game, I think Diablo just comes out on top in my opinion. 16 player LAN deathmatch on Quake was pretty sweet however.

Diablo, I much preferred SP to MP though I enjoyed Quake a lot with my brother, though I tended to hate it since I sucked at it with my brother bragging every single time he killed me.

Close race between these 2......

I'm declaring Fallout as the champion in my 1997 Poll but I'm dissapointed with the turnout, I should have been able to gather 100 votes there.

Anyhow, continue voting here, and please state your pick.

I had to pick I love them both equally. They both were pretty ground breaking for their own genre.

Interesting note....you could consider both of these games 1997 games, perhaps making 1997 as good a year as any in PC gaming history.

Some sources say Diablo wasn't released to the public until Jan. 1997 (though I could have sworn I bought in December 1996), and as for Quake....

well, Id Software re-released Quake as WinQuake (fully Windows improved version) and GL Quake (which gave the game FAR superior graphics when using a 3dfx card) in Jan. 2007, and both expansion packs followed shortly in February and March 1997. So the major Quake rage began in 1997 along with 3d acceleration.

But....we'll consider these 1996 games.

State your pick if you want to see the thread survive and get more votes, I can't keep doing it.

Forum seems apathetic these days, I think I'm going to hold off on beginning the 1998 for awhile.

Just for fun, I'd like to see the outcome here though. I'm convinced PC Games from the 1996 - 2000 period are far superior to most PC games these days.

Quake is in the lead.

Diablo's soundtrack is sooooo perfect for the game. Worth listening to, if you only started with D2.

Here's some of the music when you reached the areas, made the game positively dark and malevolent, with an Atmosphere Diablo 2 never reached:

Dungeon beneath the Church (lvls 1-4)

The Catacombs (lvls 5-8 )

The Caves (lvls 9-12)

Hell (lvls 13-16)

My favorite without question is the Catacombs, terrifying in those levels, particularly 2:06 - ending, chilling

Positively twisted if you listen all the way through them.

oh yea... these tracks are composed in flats and sharps mainly, for instance guitars are tuned 1 half step down for this music. (i played along with it many times teenage years) there is the title track as well... with the snare drums....

catacombs was my favorite too, that guitar wailing at the beginning of the track.. but i also loved the caves, (with the guitar that had that heavy wah on it that made it sound like a panther screaming... very cool and dark)

diablo 1 has one of the best soundtracks period IMO.

but lets not forget the hardest track there to compose.... Tristram (anyone that doesnt believe me... have you tried just playing along with it?) that track is an inspiration for many a musician... and a staple in the soundtrack from videogames universe.

wow, didn't know the Tristram theme was so tough to play, I have new-found respect for it.

Is this same guy composing the Diablo 3 soundtrack?

no unfortunately, Matt Uelmen is the composer for diablo 1 and 2... not for diablo 3,, he left blizzard and went to Runic games( which was previously blizzard north, then flagship studios, now its runic games)

matt also did the music in the recent game Torchlight, which is nice, its more along the lines of wow meets diablo 2 for music, but its still very nice. (ps he also did some of the dungeon tracks in burning crusade WOW)

I have Torchlight, I'll have to listen to it more.

Well, hopefully they get the music right for Diablo 3, unfortunately several people from Diablo series have left, i think a couple went to ArenaNet and made Guild Wars.
