Wow, 1997 was an incredible year for PC Gaming, no doubt the best up until that point. I could have listed 20 more good games on my Polls without breaking a sweat.

But it boils down to these four, vote on and state your pick if you would.

Got to tell ya I miss those Curse of Monkey Island clips, I'll have to play the game again sometime.

I'll have to check out GS's release dates against other sites, hard for me to believe 3 of these giants released the same day in September.

Check out the new Gameplay vids if you wish for some nostalgia :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fallout

Release Date: 09/30/1997

GS Score: 8.7

GameRankings score: 91.92% (12 Reviews)

GS Line: "Fallout is not only a worthy successor to Wasteland, it's also a role-playing game that is destined to become a clas*ic in its own right. Put simply, Fallout may be the best role-playing game to be released in years."

Gameplay Sample: Fallout - Just after returning the water chip(I wanted to skip the spoiler for the water chip)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2

Release Date: 09/30/1997

GS Score: 8.9

GameRankings Score: 86.87 (15 reviews)

GS Line: "The designers have done a commendable job of creating an immersive environment and have come up with what is arguably the best single-player first-person shooter since Doom. The level design is great and the sense of control is unparalleled."

Gameplay Sample: Boss Battle vs the insane Dark Jedi Boc(this guy handled him much better than I did)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quake 2

Release Date: 11/30/1997

GS Score: 9.0

GameRankings Score: 88.56 (16 Reviews)

GS Line: "Whatever else may be said about Quake II, one thing is certain: It is the only first-person shooter to render the original Quake entirely obsolete."

Gameplay Sample: Quake II speed run through about 1st third of game(how'd she get 3rd person? console commands? The song that starts at 6:50 is my fav in the game :) )

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total Annihilation

Release Date: 09/30/1997

GS Score: 9.3

GameRankings Score: 88.85% (13 reviews)

GS Line: "Cavedog has done a commendable job of taking the basic mechanics of real-time strategy and using them to create something new. If you're looking for a game that is challenging and rewarding on entirely new levels, Total Annihilation is highly recommended."

Gameplay Sample: Level 5 Arm side continued destruction(This is a little later than the last gameplay vid, but a continuation of wiping out The Core)

Yeah, that's my choice too. And apparently Sony was impressed as well, since the death sounds in Killzone 2 sound remarkably similar to those in Quake 2 =P

Hopefully they will.......Fallout takes the lead!

Its gettting late for U.S. and Canada, the latter of which is probably celebrating their hockey victory (hockey seems so important to them).

It was darn hard to choose between Fallout and Quake 2. I think Fallout is the better game out of the box, while Quake 2 is supplemented greatly by mods.

Hopefully most people vote out of the box.....however, the fact that Quake 2 is very mod friendly is simply a point in favor of it. By "out of the box" I do mean patched up as well. Basically the game as the designers made it and meant it to be.

By the way. I'm one of the few that voted Jedi Knight so far, loved all these games, but had the most good memories from that one.

Interesting, if Curse of Monkey Island had beaten out JK last Poll, we would have 4 seperate genres in this Poll, nice mix.

Well, I'm off to work, keep the votes going.

Also, should I do a 1998 Poll or not? I have 12 games lined up, what do you guys think?

Are you all polled out or would you like to see 1998 Polls?

Yep you should do an 98 poll, lots of great games in that year, legends. I really don't know which one will win from those two giants :) (not gonna spoil those two but I guess some might know them if they have favorite games from 98 ), but those two aside, there are around 4 or 5 other superb games.

I was 6 in 1997. But I've played all the games listed. I guess it's really just a draw between Dark Forces II and Fallout 1 for me. But since I didn't play Fallout 1 till like a year ago my heart and vote goes to Dark Forces II.

It's fair to say we already know what would win for 1998. I think a 2000 poll would be far more interesting as there was no real winner that year.

Good enough, thanks guys, I'll proceed, but......there is one little matter I need to clean up.

My 1996 Championship Poll ended in a tie between Diablo and Quake 1 .........I need the 2 of them to slug it out, I'll do that one tommorrow morning EST

I did all the years from 1999 - 2005 about 6 months ago or so........

here's the thread again:

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27038904

wow, I'm surprised I didn't make 2 Polls for 2000.......

lol, Deus Ex and D2 tied, I kept them both in polls leading up to the finals 2000-2005 as they beat out tough competition on the way to the Finals.

The finals ended as:

1. Half-Life 2

2. Diablo 2

3. Deus Ex

4. Planescape: Torment

5. Max Payne 2 (the big surprise, nice to see though)

I started with like 60 games and it came down to these 5.

I'd love to see Starcraft or Half-Life get upset there...probably won't happen but we will see. The 12 I will select are rock-solid excellent, 1998 was a brilliant year, then again so was 1997, 1999, and 2000.

Why don't you start one?

That was before my PC Gaming days, although I've played DOOM of course.

Yeah, that was my pick as well.....if you saw my last Poll, Curse of Monkey Island was the same year, good times for Lucas Arts.

Ok guys I'm gonna put the 1996 heavyweights Poll up, Diablo vs Quake, be sure to vote and tell us your pick!

This Poll is still going.....plenty of time

I put up a new Poll to separate the tie between Diablo and Quake (they tied in my 1996 Championship Poll) for the 1996 Crown, time to find out who the Champ really is.......vote in that one and tell us your pick if you are so inclined.

I have played all of them, back when i was 7. Jedi Knight though, is the one that I found myself playing a lot! It was Star Wars and had lightsabers! And also Quake 2 is worth mentioning. Never got really into Fallout
