I'm planning on getting a HD 6990 and am wondering how they compare to two HD 6950's. Which setup will give better performance and by how much? Also, if I get a 6990, if I want to upgrade, is it a good to buy a HD 6950/6970 to go along with it?

I wouldn't bother upgrading from CFX 6950s to a 6990...

the HD 6990 is a monster but its got a lot of flaws....it heats up a lot..it goes over 75c.so from all the reviews i've read you need a monster cooler if your looking to overclock or even just play at stock..the 6950's are much better option.

6990 if you're doing water cooling, otherwise CF 6950. Better yet wait for the 7 series :)

Do not upgrade from 2 6950's to a 6990. Another option is buy a 6990 and just add it to your current crossfire setup. Have fun with quadfire!

My computer actually died, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what kind of performance I'll get if I get a 6990. I'm also considering a 6970 and a 570.

Like I said, my computer died... so I need to get a new graphics card. I'm not taking 2 HD 6950's and throwing them out the window. I had defective parts and had to return the cards, so I'm wondering what kind of performance i'd get with a HD 6990 in comparison to two 6950's
