Current system:

AMD Athlon 3700

7900 gt

2gb RAM

I was thinking about upgrading my processor to a Q6600, but I don't know if it will require more power over my old processor or even if my current powersupply can handle it. (I know very little about powersupplies)

And if I buy a new motherboard, will I have to reformat my harddrive?

Oh and if it matters, motherboard I will be getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128012, RAM I will be getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220144

1. your processor doesnt take that much power, its your video card that will take more. you will be fine.

2. You might have to re-install your os. Which is probably better because you should start clean.

Fixed. Really, there is no reason you should try doing it without reinstalling your OS. If if you come out successfully, there may be things wrong deep in the registry that takes months to find.
