I have 2 sticks of 512mb ddr400 ram PC3200, and I was thinking about buying 2 1gb sticks of ddr500 PC4000 for a good price. Will this run faster than getting another 2x512 sticks? Will it run fine on windows XP?

It should do. The faster RAM will be downclocked to the slower speed though.

ya, it's the rule of the weakest link: You're PC is only as good as your weakest component. In this case, the faster one will slow down to match the slower one.

Yes it will be faster, and more stable than running 4 DIMMS. If you plan on overclocking the 2 sticks og 1GB is also better.

I plan on using all 4 sticks, 2x512 along with 2x1gb to make 3gb total. Not sure if you got that or not. I do want to OC my cpu, but not to really high levels, just a little.

Make sure the new RAM is compatible with the old. You'll run into a lot of trouble if you don't check what type of RAM you currently have.

I have Patriot Extreme Performance PC3200 DDR400. How do I check if it's compatible?

Because all the RAM sticks should work together. If you purchase a different type of RAM sticks, they might not be compatible. Meaning, your PC will freeze, restart, and your monitor might black out every now and then. That's why it's preferable to get the same type you have now. If you were changing your RAM altogether, then I wouldn't be telling you this, but because you're adding new ones, then you should make sure they're compatible. Just ask someone at the store if your current RAM will be compatible with the ones you are about to purchase.

I had this setup (2x512MB + 2x1GB DDR2) on my previous setup. It will work without any problem. But as some one said, RAM clock will work at slowest speed that is PC3200 mode. But combo will work.
