By anyone's standards, 2007 was a bleak year for PC game sales when you compare them against console sales. I've been playing on the PC since Starcraft and Diablo II, and I can't find any really good reasons to dish out cash for new hardware anymore. Last summer, since I knew a bunch of great games were coming out for consoles, I bought an Xbox 360. I literally cannot find a reason to switch back to PC gaming right now.

I've tried the Crysis demo, I own the Orange Box and Call of Duty 4 on both PC and Xbox, and I'm really not all that impressed. My computer is no slouch, with 3 GB or RAM, a Core 2 Quad Q6600, and a 7900GS. I can no longer justify paying for an 8800 GT to keep up with the advancements mid-range enthusiast hardware. I played BF2 and CSS at CAL, TWL, and TGL level until late 2006, and the community isn't the same anymore.

Other than Starcraft 2, no PC games have managed to hold my attention so far this year. Are there any FPS titles that I've missed, especially the ones with well developed multiplayer? I'd love to get back into PC gaming, but I just really can't find any incentives at all. So, what does PC gaming have to offer this year? If it's not better than last year's offerings, this will be a downhill trend for just about every game except WoW.

*Now is the time of year when gaming news should be coming out at its fastest, because its after CES and still before E3 (or at least that's how it used to work, E3 has been mostly killed off by its own host company)*

Since when has PC game sales EVER matched Console sales?......PC has always been a niche platform for more hardcore users, while Consoles and handhelds are far more mainstream and cater to a more mainstream gaming audience, hence the reason they have much higher sales......that and the fact that Consoles charts fact ALL home systems and handhelds.

2007 was a great year for PC.....Crysis, The Witcher, Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, BioShock, World in Conflict, Gallactic Civilizations II Dark Avatar, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, Gears of War PC, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, and Unreal Tournament 3.....there was a big title for a fan of any major genre on PC last year.

And 2008 is looking even better.

PC Exclusives currently only officially announced for PC like......Starcraft 2, Spore, Half Life 2: Episode Three, STALKER: Clear Sky, Sins of a Solar Empire, Empire Total War, Dreamfall Chapters, Space Siege, Fallen Empire Legions, Guild Wars 2, Warhammer Online, WoW: Wrath of the Lich King, etc.

Other PC exclusives will be further revealed this year....games like BioWare's Dragon Age, 2K Boston's PC project, Battlefield 3, and Blizzard's Project Hydra (rumored to be Diablo III)

Not to mention multiplats where the PC version will either be the definitive version and benefit the most on PC or at least equally as solid as the console versions, games like....Mafia 2, Borderlands, Alan Wake, Far Cry 2, Brothers in Arms Hells Highway, Left 4 Dead, Age of Conan, Project Origin, Fallout 3, etc.

2007 was one of the greatest years for PC gaming....PERIOD!

If you werent happy with atleast 10 titles, then I guess youre just not cut out to be a PC gamer. We will miss you. Here's what I enjoyed though:

Overlord
Supreme Commander
WoW: Burning Crusade
The Orange Box
C&C 3
Silent Hunter IV
Lord of the Rings Online
Tabula Rasa
Crysis
Call of Duty 4
Hellgate London
GRAW 2
The Witcher (great, ****c RPGs hardly ever come out...thats how good 2007 was!)

There are a few titles as well that I forgot to list. To be honest, I didnt have enough money to buy all the games I wanted lol.

2008 is going to be even better, especially since it seems developers know how to make decent ports now as well.

seems like you've just switched platforms, are you expecting something from PC, people change, platforms change. If you are happy with 360 then I wouldn't spend my time looking over my shoulder at possible PC games, they will come and you will hear about them. THere are a lot of multiplatforms due out in 2008.

Overlord {was bad}
Supreme Commander {felt like a SC mod}
WoW: Burning Crusade {WoW is a cancer to PC gaming}
The Orange Box {great game pack, TF2 and Portal are amazing. I own this for Xbox and PC}
C&C 3 {not very good, compared to the originals}
Silent Hunter IV {submarine game, never played them}
Lord of the Rings Online {this is why WoW is a cancer}
Tabula Rasa {poor integration of FPS into RPG}
Crysis {tried the demo, nothing special beyond graphics. Plays just like FarCry}
Call of Duty 4 {very good gameplay, like BF2 and CSS together, but very small community}
Hellgate London{This game was a big letdown for me, I expected something much better}
GRAW 2 {Never liked GRAW, or any Tom Clancy game}
The Witcher {never bothered to play it}mrbojangles25

I play games with large, competitive communities. Name a PC game that will do that this year or has done that from last year. I can't find one, can you?

Crysis only sold just over 85,000 copies in its first month, UT3 sold barely 33,000 in the same amount of time. If you look at games like Call of Duty 4, they completely got killed on the PC when compared to sales (even on the PS3, not to even mentioning the 360).

How could this possibly be a good year for PC gaming when super-hyped titles like Crysis and UT3 fall flat out when it comes to sales figures? The only game that's sold well this year is WoW: BC.

Games that require top of the line system requirements while everyone is upgrading their systems don't sell well initially? Preposterous!

While console games sell well initially (and don't have digital distribution also btw.) that's it, they practically die with the system a few years later.

People are gonna buy Crysis later, not now, too busy upgrading.

The 8800 GT sold out at Fry's, around the time Crysis came out - believe me, people aren't buying as many games right now.

What were CoD4's sales on Consoles? Because Gamestop didn't even get the PC version on time, and CoD4 came out a WEEK after the release date on Steam and D2D, yet it's still a Top Seller, and yet you say it got "killed" without even giving us the sales figures?

We have heard every damn "PC GAMING IS DIEING, WE ARE DOOMED! DOOOOMED!" myth, and it's getting on our nerves, because people always believe those stupid sales figures, and then come onto GS, and make another stupid thread, and then debunk every single thing the TC says.

Sorry if I come off as angry, but I'm sick of this crap, read my blog if you want more info from me, oh, and "Smokeydabear" has a great blog about "PC GAMING IS DIEING OH NOES!" which you should read too, it should uncloud your mind.

Who cares about sales?.....do you own stock in those companies.

If you're so concerned with what platform sells the most....then why don't you stick to only playing Nintendo DS games, since that's what's dominating the charts.

As a consumer, I care about Game quality...and guess what, here at Gamespot Crysis won the Editor's Choice for Best Overall Shooter:

http://www.gamespot.com/best-of/genreawards/index.html?page=4

You stay focused on sales, I'll instead be content in knowing that I get a chance to enjoy the game that Won Best Overall Shooter at major gaming sites like Gamespot.

Second, Crysis exceeded sales expections in North America. They were only expecting to sell 65K in U.S. retail, they sold around 85K. Not to mention it was top of the sales charts in Europe...and guess what, Crysis generated the second largest amount of revenue out of all PC games in the month of December, even beating out WoW and The Sims games in retail revenue, only COD4 generated more revenue then Crysis last month on PC...and that's just in looking at U.S. retail.

I play games with large, competitive communities. Name a PC game that will do that this year or has done that from last year. I can't find one, can you?

RikkAndrsn

And what long list of console exclusive games released last year or coming this year fit this criteria? :|

IN NORTH AMERICA. And only by retail sales, not digital distribution. Man, how many times are people going to keep going back to that? For all we know, the number of either of those titles being digitally distributed was half or close to half of the sales (probably not with UT3, but that's totally feasible for Crysis given that it was on the EA Downloader), hell, maybe more. Furthermore, PC gaming is huge over in Europe. Both games undoubtedly sold many times more there (as is characteristic of the region) than they did here.

youre a very "glass is half empty" type of guy, arent you?

The only console game I can think of with a large competative community is Halo 3, but that doesnt matter since games are limited to a laggy 16 players or something lol.

You seem very familiar with the goings on of the PC gaming community. You also seem like you've made up your mind. I can't see any reason for you to be here besides trying to provoke people - while your motive may be pure, your attitude clearly isn't... I appreciate that you may just be replying to the tone of the replies... but that's because we are absolutely sick of people saying there's nothing left on PC. I'm sure you're well aware of everything hitting PC in 2008 that appeals to you.

If you want large, competitive communities - there's StarCraft II, if it hits in 08. And that's about it. If you want good games, there's a hell of a lot coming in '08.

Hey guys leave him alone, he is just poor and angry.

IMHO, PC has better games, graphics, controls and MP and patches are free. I don't like those crappy racing and sports games, so I'm ok with FPS and RTS.

Don't continue this topic.

I am the first to admit admit that I am buying less and less PC games. And PC had been my platform of choice since the time of 486. I mean all the lousy console ports are killing my gameplay experience. And some PC franchises being made multiplatform and thus optimized for console mechanics and joypad. I remember all the hype for Halo. Then when it first came to PC, GS review, player review. All say great. After playing it all I can say mediocre. There are less and less real PC games like ,for example, Galactic Civilizations. There is a reason why Final Fantasy never succeeded on PC. If I get the desire to play console games I'll buy a console. Actually , I'm getting a Wii. And I don't believe that console games will ever achieve the level of fan content and mods PC players have at their disposal. At least not without having to pay for them. Neverwinter Nights for example. Now that is a PC games. I won't even mention shooters and their customization options.

Bleak sales for PC games? Let me guess, you only read the news and saw "Crysis, a highly anticipated game, has only sold bla bla bla bla". Did you know that it is only the sales statics in North America and doesn't include digital sales? Hell, I purchased Crysis via EA Store (Yes, I sold my soul to the devil but I couldn't get it at the game stores near me) so my sale and probably many more were never counted. Now, if you can get the digital distribution sales/European sales then you can finally comment on how poor the sales are. Then we also have the fact that PC sales are more gradual then consoles. So a lower PC sale is more likely to sell over the next 2 years, while a console game will only have the first month or two in huge sales and then fall off the charts.

As for nothing came out this year, not sure where you were looking. I personally added an extra 20 games to my collection this year and have enjoyed all of the games.

Oh my PC gaming is dieing!! How else could nVidia be voted company of the year by forbes if it wasn't for the amazing PS3 sales to boost their GPU's. oh wait.....

nVidia was voted company of the year, because never before did they manage to sell this many dedicated GPU's. Face it, PC gaming is going strong. The media are just constantly looking at the wrong figures.

I did the same, and at this point the xbox 360 list is still empty. The only game I'm interested in that will be released on consoles (no word on PC version) is GTA IV, but even if someone gave me a console and the game, I doubt I'll play it for more than 20 minutes. GTA type games (like almost any other genre... fighting games being the only exception) does not belong on a console The day they stop making games for the PC, is the day I'll stop being a gamer
