As we know the ability to mod games is one of the great boons of PC gaming. To better inform the Gamespot PC community I felt the need to put together a list of Mods that are relevant to the Year 2009 (meaning, these mods are great even if they were released in the past or haven't been released yet). I will be sorting the Mods by engine. Feel free to add any mods I miss. I will try to keep this thread up to date with mods.

This is a thread for the general public of PC gamers (I'm assuming most attentive PC gamers know of these mods and probably more mods than I'm listing). The idea is to provide a list of mods with a concise summary of the mod.

An * means it is a mod that I have played.

Refractor 2 (Battlefield 2/2142)

Project Reality (latest version: 0.85)MP

Just as it sounds, Project Reality is based around realism. With a steeper learning curve this mod will appeal to those who enjoy games like: Red Orchestra and Operation Flashpoint. Forgotten Hope 2 (latest version: 2.15)*MP

Forgotten Hope 2 takes the battlefield series back to World War II. The mod has everything a WWII fan would love. Forgotten Hope 2 features more than 250 pieces of authentic equipment, and with more to come. CryEngine 2 (Crysis/Warhead)

MechWarrior: Living Legends (Unreleased)MP

YES, relive the days of the mechwarrior franchise. This mod takes the cryengine2 and applies it to Mech Warfare. The mod features 32 player online, dynamic lighting as the battle continues (from morning to night), destructible environments, and 28 mechs. This was a short section because I haven't been paying too much attention to Crysis mods and with most being unreleased I have no idea what mods are being hyped the most.

Source Engine (Half-Life2, etc)

GoldenEye Source (Latest version: Beta 3.0.1) *MP

In an attempt to bring back the nostalgic feeling from a decade ago a team of modders has brought GoldenEye Source. Based on the N64 version of GoldenEye the team has increased the scale of the multiplayer portion of the game. Black Mesa (Unreleased)SP,MP

For those of you who don't know, Black Mesa is a mod that recreates the original Half-Life on the Source Engine. The mod features a Single player campaign and a Multiplayer deathmatch mode. Basically, all you need to know is that when this is released you'd better be downloading it. More information at http://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa or www.blackmesasource.com.

Jailbreak (latest version: 0.4.1)*MP

With a very large update on the way Jailbreak looks to be a promising mod (I would wait for the update to download). The mod features 2 teams faced with the goal of imprisoning the other team. The catch is that players can either be broken out of jail or can escape from jail via puzzles. Keep an eye out for this mod as it is set for 0.5 release soon. NeoTokyo (Unreleased) MP

Taking place in Tokyo, 30 years in the future, this mod creates a world where humans have begun to bind with technology. From what I've gathered it seems to be a death match type of mod. Either way this mod looks promising. More information at www.moddb.com/mods/neotokyo or www.neotokyohq.com.

Resistance and Liberation (Latest version: Alpha 4)* MP

Resistance and Liberation bring realism to a WWII setting. The mod is based highly on squad communication and teamwork. Since it is an alpha there are bugs and optimization issues. Fortress Forever (Latest Version: 2.3)* MP

Fortress Forever is a take on the original Team Fortress. It's basically a remake of Team Fortress for the source engine. It's great if you want to experience Team Fortress without having to purchase the Orange box or if you want the feeling of the old TF. Battlegrounds 2 (Latest Version: 1.2.1b)* MP

Battlegrounds is a take on the American Revolution. Fight with the Rebellious colonist or with the Redcoats from Great Britain. Use swords, muskets, and bayonets to fight your way to victory. Information is available at http://www.moddb.com/mods/battle-grounds-2 or at Bgmod.com

Emipres (Latest Version: 2.22)* MP

Empires is a mod for Half-Life 2 which will combine the genres of real-time strategy and first person shooter. Each team has four ****s to choose from (scout, rifleman, grenadier, and engineer) with unique weapons and skills each. One player will become the commander by entering the team's command vehicle to build the team's base and lead his team to victory. Once your base is built up, purchase vehicles from your team's vehicle factory to open up another facet of Empires' gameplay. Vehicles can be customized with unique weapons, armor, and engines. The commander can research improvements to all aspects of vehicles such as longer range cannons, homing missiles, and armor-piercing machine gun rounds. Once your team is prepared, lead an assault into the enemy base. The enemy team is defeated when all players are wiped out with either no place to respawn or no reinforcements remaining or the team's command vehicle is destroyed. Half-Life 2 Wars (Latest Version: 0.5)* SP,MP

Dear Esther (Latest Version: 1.1) SP

Dear Esther is part of a research project, creating experimental game mods, based at the University of Portsmouth, UK. The aim was to use Source to create something radically different from normal: an interactive story that dispensed with traditional gameplay and focused instead on an open-ended, semi-random narrative. Suicide Survival (Latest Version: 1.1)* MP

A very simplistic mod about 2 teams, the suicidal and the survivors. The catch is that the suicidals are plants that blend in with the surrounding environment. This mod has a very clean look and can be lots of fun. Information at www.moddb.com/mods/suicide-survival or at suicide-survival.com

MarioKart: Source (Unreleased) MP,SP

Like Goldeneye Source this game is recreating the past. Bringing you the world of mariokart to the source engine and online multiplayer. Fistful of Frags (Latest Version: 2.1)* MP

Operation Black Mesa (Unreleased) SP,MP

A total remake of Half-Life: Opposing Force on the Source engine. Take Adrian Shepard through Black Mesa and search for Gordon Freeman. Parallel (Crysis)

This mod tells the story of three ordinary men who were involved into the experiment on this weapon's influence on the people. None of them is a hero, nobody saves the world, they are all just victims of circumstances. And hereby, every one of them uncovers his true nature.

Light Spire: Fortunes Web (Crysis)

An Action Adventure RPG using the Cryengine2. This is a total conversion mod//game in which we wish to turn into a commercial game soon. I know a lot of you are probably wondering what the game is about, what are some of the features, and most importantly, when can it be played; all your questions and more will be answered soon at the launch of the website in the coming week. However, the team and I have been working very hard on this project for the past 3-4 months, and we are just dying to leak out some of the work to the other fellow Game Development communities. Please keep checking in and exploring the websites, as once they launch, they will have all the information needed. Here at Lukewarm, we like to give sneak peaks with a bang… Allow me to say "The evolution of fantasy is on its way!

Brick It (Crysis)

Brick It is a modification with the dedicated goal to create a Lego universe. Our universe should pick up as many different Lego elements as possible and unite them to a single unit. Regarding the models, we want to realize this project as realistic as we can - so the rebuilding of the objects with real Lego bricks can be guaranteed (in certain limits of course). Concerning the physics we will choose a middle path between realism and abstract, unreal characteristics, to maximize the fun factor of Brick It. We want to combine a lot of various happy colors, animations, funny effects and lots more.

Stargate SG-27 (Crysis)

STARGATE SG-27 is a single player modification for Crysis that aims to drop players right into the heart of intergalactic conflict, with a tactical combat based gameplay. Players will be apart of SG-27, an elite special-ops combat unit which is dispatched to deal with hostile situations on various off world locations that require the unique tactical experience of an elite military special op teams. A variety of the finest weapons from Earth's arsenal fitting different situations, as well as a variety of alien weaponry will be available to use.

No images that are worth seeing, just check the video, the size of the map is just amazing and it's so detailed.

Petrograd (Crysis)

Petrograd: an action-thriller first person shooter. Enter the shoes of a Black-Ops Special Agent, investigating the disappearance of a full city's population overnight. An eerie atmosphere and immersive environments are just the beginning, nothing is quite what it seems in this suspenseful experience set in post-USSR Eastern Europe.

Black Sierra (UT 3)

Finally! The type of game you've always wanted to be able to play with a friend; Black Sierra is a cooperative horror survival game. A singleplayer horror experience designed specifically for 2-5 players. With an action packed gameplay, horrorific atmosphere, and an unknown enemy from the deep. Players will be pitted up against small groups of fast, agile and deadly creatures. Quick to take down, but hard to hit. Players will need to work together to make it through the various scenarios as they make it into dark forests, towns and more. Armed with high quality weaponary, such as the popular G36C, and M4 players will soon be required to scavenge civilian shotguns, rifles and pistols as ammunition is decreased.

Ghost Writer (UT 3)

There are two nursery rhymes invloved with the mod so far. The Muffin Man and the Three Blind Mice. After making your way into the Crooked Mansion (where the whole game is set), you will find yourself in the Mansion Foyer. At the back of the foyer is a spiral staircase that has doors leading to the different rooms of the house. Each door leads to a different fairytale.

The Three Blind Mice tale starts at the bottom of the Mansion Wine Cellar. You must find your out of the Spider infested area and make your way to the Dining Room. Here, the Three Blind Mice will shrink you down to their size using their magical capabilities. The game is then carried out on the dining room table!

The Muffin Mans tale starts one end of the 'corridor of death'. After successfully making your way down the corridor and into the ballroom, you will have to make your way through the clockwork dancers to advance to the Muffin Mans Kitchen. Here, you will battle with Gingerbread men, will have to collect screaming muffins and finally destroy the Muffin Man himself.

By successfully completing a tale/level, you will be given a page of the nursery rhyme book that will return to its original state (and also give you access to the rest of the house). The player must collect all of the books pages and eventually battle it out with the Crooked Man.

Each tale contains a fast/action and slow/puzzling gameplay experience. The diverse amount of interactiviy will surely keep the experience new and exciting for the player.

Renegade X (UT 3)

Renegade X (formerly known as Renegade 2007) is a mod dedicated to recreating C&C Renegade in the new generation engine, the Unreal Engine 3. We all believe the Command and Conquer series is a very special one, and its fans have been following its games for over a decade now. C&C has been one of the most successful videogame series in the RTS Genre. Our modding team believes that C&C Renegade is truly a hidden gem in the FPS genre.

It is a racing mod. You're ride on small RC Cars on the streets of big town. There's few options to play:...

Xen Project (UT 3)

The mod will feature some interesting gameplay ideas :

• When the player moves, he feels the weight of his body, he does not slip on the floor. (Crysis / Riddick EFFB / Darkness feeling).
• When you encounter an obstacle or a "system", you can use this button to jump over the object, grab a railing and lift you up, open a door, fuse / weld a door, hack a security panel...
• There are four player ****s : Marine, Support, Tech, Smartgunner.
• Weapons : M42a, Shotgun, Handgun, Smartgun, Flamethrower, Mines : proximity / laser, Grenades, Motion Sensor

Berimbau (Half Life 2)

Berimbau is a multiplayer Source engine mod featuring fierce sword duels in a retro-future universe. The game features an open sword combat system that allows for creative use of combos, counter-attacks, and parries. This combat system encourages players to develop attack patterns and strategies to defeat their opponents, rather than random "knife-fight" melee combat. We plan to become a total conversion in the future, making this our own game, free to share with anyone who has Steam and the SourceSDK Base.

Call of Cthulhu: Ex Scientia Vera (Neverwinter Nights 2)

A mod, bordering total conversion for Neverwinter Nights 2, Ex Scientia delves in to more darker aspects of the fantasy and science fiction genres. Occult magic, Evil cultists, Myths & Legends and Cosmic Alien entities from horror writer H.P. Lovecraft pose the greatest significant threat against the otherwise ignorant humans.

Humanity is not defenseless against the horrors, fortunatly enough. Science and industry prevail in the form of steampunk contraptions and clockwork gadgets. And as an inquisitive race, humans are not afraid to dig deep in occult mysteries and few have mastered the art of magic themselves.

The Moonlight Path (Neverwinter Nights 2)

Here you find excerpts from the story, what the beginning is about

The story begins, as a tribute, from the glorious City of Baldur's Gate.
How it begins depends on your Alignment, so I leave them as a mystery, just to tease you all.
Player spends time in the City and explores the many places within, doing various acts and quests there as she likes.

You very soon learn that your father is cold-bloodedly murdered and
after a series of strange events and revelations of the impending doom

* Player shapes the world and people around him/her depending on
actions, company and other things. Most of the deeds have impact
somewhere in the world, people change when they travel with you. Forget
linear gameplay, for there is none in The Moonlight Path.

* The path between alignments – and afterwards depending on your
actions taken – is made different, to make the game much more intense,
interesting and complex. This also adds alot to replayability and
variation.

1. Baldur's Gate 3 : Black Hound

Official Site/

- It is a new unofficial campaign module for Obsidian Entertainment's Neverwinter Nights 2 roleplaying game.

- The module's author is Josh (J.E.) Sawyer, currently employed by Obsidian as a lead designer, and formerly the lead designer of Icewind Dale 2 and two unannounced (and canceled) Black Isle projects - Baldur's Gate 3 and Fallout 3.

- The game's leitmotif is "You cannot kill guilt." Essentially, the game deals with a number of events associated with guilt, loss, and vengeance, and characters that got entangled in those events. The game should be very character-driven, and choices made by the player as the protagonist will have a real meaning in the game world.

- Currently, only - J.E. Sawyer is working on the game. To be fair, though, the project has a number of resources to draw on - design documents, concept art, etc - that were created by the now-defunct Black Isle Studios, role-playing division of Interplay. Some of the people who were involved in Project Jefferson at that time include Chris Parker, Vance Kovacs, Dave Maldonado, Chris Avellone, Sean K. Reynolds, and Brian Menze.

-The game is set in the Dalelands region of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. More specifically, most of the game should take part in three of the Dales - Archendale, Deepingdale, and Battledale

2. BG 1 Remake (NWN 2 )

I just found this Deus Ex mod today and I must say that it looks very promising.

Nightblade - A Thief inspired total conversion for Unreal Tournament 3. night-blade.com. Its being made by a group calling themselves black cat games. You can find out about their other excellent projects at blackcatgames.com.

Ultima IX: Redemption - Ultima fans know that the Ultima IX that EA/Origin released was far less then expected based on the standards set by earlier titles. This mod is an attempt to remake Ultima IX based on the best design aspects of earlier titles. You can find out more at ultima.cfkasper.de. You'll need Morrowind to play.

I played Resistance and Liberation, but there was no Aussie servers so my ping was around 300 and I was really horrible.

I played a night time map where you parachute in, which was cool, except that I died in the air before safely landing on my second drop. There were a few good people playing, which was great, but the second round, on another map, was horrible (players). Team killing, no co-ordnation, blah.

Gameplay was mostly okay, but it takes a while to get used to the gunplay. Aiming can take a bit too long.

I did some voice work for a Crysis mod before and Ill be doing the main voice for this upcoming Crysis mod that will be more story oriented and have new gameplay elements (new moves and special moves with your suit).

The mod is intended to be a homage, and tribute to the original Sacrifice of Angels mod for Homeworld. It will use many of the same models, and effects created for that mod by the Trekmods team. As with the original SoA mod for Homeworld, Sacrifice of Angels 2 is set during the Dominion War era of Star Trek. The factions will be the Federation, Klingons, Romulan, and Dominion. Dreamball (Half Life 2)

Ragnarok Arena Remastered (Half Life 2)

Utilizing the latest Valve Source engine, Ragnarok Arena Remastered aims to bring you the latest and greatest in sidescrolling deathmatch gameplay. Featuring larger maps, vibrant graphics and crowd pleasing technologies that have been around since 2004, RAR aims to bring Ragnarok Arena kicking and screaming into the twenty first century. BlockStorm is a remake of the old and extremely famous arcade game Arkanoid. Your mission is to break all the blocks you can see in the screen, that's all. No blood, no guns, just a weird pipe floating and moving in a X axis and a ball with a strange physic movement with no inertia breaking coloured blocks. So simple and funny!...

The Ball (UT 3) - 2 out of 3 parts are released, the next one, in May

The Ball offers an adventure that puts you in the boots of a geologist who gets stuck in a cavern and bumps onto an ancient and Toltec complex holding a mysterious ball. While making your way through the internal workings of ancient ziggurats, golden cities, and huge caverns, your only companion is a giant gold and metal-shelled ball, a mysterious artifact in its own right, that you use to make your way through a series of rooms and caverns, and to crush enemies with. As you progress through the mod, slowly the real purpose of this gigantic Toltec complex becomes clear, and you are sucked into a thousands of years old story of betrayal and secrecy.

Final Act (UT 3)

Final Act is a team based, third person, Real-Time Strategy mod for UT3. Players compete by placing living statues called "Summons" to stop the opposing team from destroying each other's Soul Well.

Snowreal (UT 3)

Snowreal is a 3rd person Snowboarding Mod for Unreal Tournament 3. Race down one of 4 massive-scale maps or show your spectacular skills in a trick competition. Switch from vast snow landscapes to a tension-packed ride over dangerous lava streams down a volcano, back to a tricky alpine slalom course.

Jurassic Rage III (UT 3)

Jurassic Rage III mutator turns hunters into the hunted. Packs of hungry dinosaurs roam the battlefield, looking for anything they can gnaw on. Whatever are your objectives, stay sharp soldier!

The Haunted (UT 3) - the new Gears of War ;)

The Haunted is a multiplayer third person shooter with human players controlling the enemies. One player is the haunted and the other players are demonic spirits who have to do everything in their malevolent power to prevent the haunted from lifting his curse. Demons have to work together, possess creatures, place traps and perform environmental actions to agonize and finally kill the haunted. Whereas the haunted has to survive and investigate eerie places to finally liberate himself from the malediction.

UT2D (UT 3)

UT2D for UT3 is a mod that turns Unreal Tournament into a 2D shooter. Basically, instead of looking out the player's eyes, you're looking at the side of the player while he runs left or right. Think like Mario, but UT3. Aside from all that, this is basically UT3. Most of the gametypes and weapons are all there. Have a fun frag fest!

Stargate: War Begins (Nexus: The Jupiter Incident)

Stargate: War Begins is a full conversion for the awesome tactical fleet simulator Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. We intend to recreate the feeling of the hit Sci-fi Tv shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. i am kind of new to pc gaming so i don't know a whole lot about modding. can somebody explain what mods are, in detail? and how do i play them? do i just download them and start playing them or do i have to have another game to play them? really want to play some of these mods but i am clueless as to what to do with them. thnx in advance.

Mods are user created addons for games, so yes you need certain games to play mods. Most total conversion mods use the games engine to create basically a new game. Most modds include an installer which will auto install the files you need to play. Once installed they will appear on either your progamlist or in if you are using a source mod it will appear in steam after you restart steam.

For mods, yes, you need the base game, for example in this thread all those mods are for, Half Life, Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis, Neverwinter Nights 2, Diablo 2 LoD, Nexus The Jupiter Incident, Battlefield 2, Sins of a Solar Empire and maybe a few other games.

So depending on the mod you like, you need to have the game it was created for. After that, you just download the mod, install it (if it has that option) if not you'll have to copy the files in certain folders, either in the game folder, or in my documents in the specific folder of that game.

dam looks nice i got to pick up UT3 and crysis as they are not only good games they have alot of good looking mods coming out cant wait :D
