What would be a better deal to go for.... A good set of 2.1 speakers or a decent set of 5.1 speakers?

I would take the 5.1 over the 2.1 any day, much better to play games in surround sound, but check if your sound card can do the 5.1 output (any motherboard up to 5 years old will most likely have it integrated)

Well my motherboard (GA-935P-S3) has 6 inputs for audio in the back so im pretty sure that it supports 5.1 surround sound.

mine has all the speakers going into the sub, and sub into my sound card. so i don't think it will matter how many ports your mobo has, just IF it can handle it.

I use 2.1, and I can barely find space for both side speakers and the woofer as it is. If you've got room for 5.1 and like the surround sound, then go for it. I'm happy with 2.1. I'm a visual quality junkie, not an audio junkie.

I use 2.1. I have a set of Klipsch GMX's which sound amazing. I used to have Promedia 5.1 Ultras hooked up to my computer, but I found that they really just ended up cluttering up my desk and I could never really position them right to get much of a sense of positional audio. When the amp blew in the Promedia sub, I moved the satellites over to the reciever on my TV and bought the GMXs. I actually prefer 2.1. Less clutter on my desk, they still sound good, and I use my headphones quite a bit anyway.

Depends if you can truly make the 5.1 speakers surround. It isn't really surround sound if all 5 speakers are in front of you :P

I've got a Logitech X50 (sumthing like that) its only 2 speakers, however the bass on it is really good. If I have the craving for surround sound, I can alway hook my PC up to my home theater system.

I'm using Klipsch Promedia 2.1's... I like the 2.1, as I'm generally able to pick out sound directions well enough from that anyway, if I'm not just using headphones instead. And I too am cramped for space on my desk. :(

I use a set of 7.1 Creative THX speakers with my Fat1ty pro card, now that really is a gaming experience, one of the best pc investments ive made, the speakers themselves arent even that expensive, but sound brilliant!
