my friend just bought a ASUS P5Q (im pretty sure) and it died before he even used it (computer wouldn't start, not even to the BIOS). And he wants a new one for around $340 australian ($220 US) that has 4 PCI-E slots.

and does anyone have any suggestion on whats wrong with what hes got? he has a; XFX gtx 285, ASUS P5Q, E8500, 4gbs kingston ram.

he put it all together then went to power up and it started, the fans turned once and then it stopped. Any ideas?

help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Litte screw type things on the case that help the motherboard from touching the metal case and shorting out the board.

The same thing happened with my machine and I attributed it to the motherboard, which is an Asus also. They must be having some quality control issues. I sent it back to newegg for a replacement - which is taking f o r e v e r btw. If he just bought it it should be under warranty since Asus warranties their boards for three years. He might get in touch with them for a replacement instead of buying a new board.

IT sounds like it could be a short. Not installing the stand-off first, as mentioned before, can cause this. This can also happen with the stand-offs installed. To rule out shorting out, set the motherboard up outside of the case, like on a phone book or box. Also, what power supply does he have?
