I think that it isn't worth the money. I would just buy a geforce 7900 gs for $130, they both perform about the same.

If you are thinking to play DX10 games; forget about it.They can't even play DX9 games very well.

If you can buy a 8800GTS 320MB

No,however, DX10 going to be in a few 08 games. And since you are upgradingnow, unless you wantto buy a new card shortly, you'll want a DX10 card.

Why buy a dx10 card if your going to be playing 08' dx10 games at the lowest settings? If you buy a dx10 card, but atleast a 8800. Those will play dx10 games decently. But the 8600's will suck at them.

I can't recommend it, really. It's not a very good card, to be honest.

well no one said that just cus it sucks w/ dx9 it will suck w/ dx 10. what if they just didnt program for dx9 drivers as efficiently as dx10. as you can see, they already hav cards just as powerful to fulfill your dx9 needs, why would they bother with a card thats main purpose is its dx10 ability WHICH i might add: we havnt even seen yet.

Both ATI's and Nvidia's midrange DX10 cards are severely lacking in performance. You're much better of getting a 7900GS or a X1950 Pro/XT

If you plan on upgrading later this year or next year, you can get it, its a decent card. Here is a review http://www.gamespot.com/forums/show_msgs.php?board_id=314159272&topic_id=25698466

How about we put it bluntly? Its worse then the 8600 gts. Either buy a 7600 gt for around $100 and then wait for the prices for the 8800's to go down, or just buy a 8800. Don't bother with the low end 8x00's.

better not bother at all with dx10 cards, the second wave of dx10 cards will be amazing.

i agree with carl, get a 7600 gt, and next year get a very powerful dx10 card (geforce series 9/ati series hd3k) :)

I think the 8 series is pretty much a flop. extremetech.com did some dx10 testes using Company of Heros and it was hardly any better, but there was like a 50% loss of frames.

Sorry for digging up and old topic, but saves having to start a new thread (and I've been a good noob and done searches)

Anyway, I'm getting a new graphics card for my birthday and I was looking at the 8600 GTS. Judging from this thread I'm getting the impression it's not as good as the 7900GS. My other option was the 7900 GT.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2195468,00.asp

I was using this link as reference cus TF2 is going to be the most demanding game on my PC (hence why I don't want anything stupidly expensive or powerful). From that there's no much difference between the 7900 GT or 8600 GTS, but what's the difference between the 7900 GT and 7900 GS?
