I'm planning on getting an HDTV. After all these years I'm still gaming on my old 19" tube TV in my room :?

I've decided that a TV 26"-32" is ideal for my room, and I'm trying to stay near the $300 range (give or take) as I'm on a fairly tight budget. Is there a noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen this size? I'm okay with spending a little extra to get 1080p but I'm not going to spend anything I don't have to.

Thanks ;)

I notice no difference to be honest.

I bought a 25" 1080p (hdmi) monitor for US$200 and noticed only slight differences on cel-shaded games and a handful of FPS' with jaggies and text. It's odd switching between 720p and 1080p sometimes, but you get used to it fairly quickly. I say if you can get a full hd set while only spending a bit more, go for it.

...then again, your eyes are trained for tubee resolutions, so 720p is gonna look fantastic to you regardless.

If you use it like a monitor, the difference will be huge.

The bigger the TV size the more you will notice the changes i remember playing on my 37" 720P with xbox 360 for the longest time then i found out my tv supported 1080i and when i changed to that... what a difference everything just looked sharper and cleaner, i guess those who dont notice a difference either dont have a big enough tv i'd say or maybe its jus them, but i dont have an expensive brand name tv and it did make a difference

I'd say 1080p has a bit more luster to it, but for the most part they look pretty similar. You will probably get a bit more contrast in 1080p.

If you're going to sit close to it (use it for a PC monitor for example) then yes... if you're going to sit away from it then not much (if at all.)

You probably don't notice a difference because you never saw a 1080p native game, 99% of console games are natively in 720p.

Try switching a PC game from 720p to 1080p you'll see a huge difference.

OK, First this depends on how far away you sit from your tv.

Also, you'll notice the resolution difference more if you're playing a game than if you're just watching hd video.

I sit about 4 ft. away from the TV (it's not a huge room :?).

Edit: And I don't watch a whole lot of movies in my room, this TV will be almost entirely for gaming (PS3 and Wii).

Depends on view distance.

If don't sit too far away the difference should be noticeable.

At 4 feet, the difference will still be very noticeable. That's assuming that the signal input is native 1080p...

I would try to get a name brand that you know simply for the fact of reliability issues. 720p should be fine for that size tv at 4' all else being equal. Most games are not 1080p anyways.

by a smaller samsung or other name brand for that price range, the picture quality will be much better. Quality>size imo when youre talking a couple inches.

For a Tv of that size, 720p and 1080p won't make a very big difference. Usually the larger the screen the more noticeable the difference is. If you get a monitor, I am told it does make a difference but I am not sure. If you want, you could try 1080i since every tv that supports 720p supports it and you get more horizontal lines and it looks closer to 1080p than 720p although again with that size I used to play with 720p.

Usually 1080i is not as good as 720p as it will introduce interlacing artifacts on a 720p set. Try to always feed the native resolution to a TV- 720p gets 720p, 1080p gets 1080p.

If you're close to the screen, you will notice a difference. I always recommend the highest resolution, but today's consoles only process 99% of the games in 720p. So if you connect it to a PS3, it isn't worth it to get 1080i because most games aren't in that format. If you connect it to a Xbox 360 it's worth nothing at all.

So only if it's hooked up to a PC, if not it's not worth spending more than 50$ for the resolution difference.

But if you want it to be future proof, get 1080i since next gen consoles will probably have a native support for games in that video format.

Whoever created that chart is a dumbass, has poor eyesight, or both. I have a 19" Samsung LCD @ 1440x900 and at 10 feet I can see a single pixel in adobe photoshop(i.e i set the pencil tool to 1 pixel and colour a single pixel black)with the view set to "actual pixels". If I can see a single pixel from that distance, then my eyes MUST be able to tell the difference between a 720p image and a 1080p image downscaled to fit the screen.

At 26 inches, no it would not matter. Do they make 26' 1080p displays?

I gotta agree, at 10 feet you arent seeing the difference between 720p and 1080p, you may be seeing a difference in contract ration or color quality. Not resolution.

You can see a black pixel from 10 feet on a white background. Possibly because of the color difference, but with 20/20 vision, that is still a difficult thing to do. What you can't see is if it is one or two pixels from that far nor the space between the 2 pixels at that distance. Here's the science to clarify: http://www.tvtechnology.com/article/12836
