I am asking this for a friend who is getting a computer and he has a choice between 3 cards, They are :

SLi, Dual nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512MB

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB

Which one would be the best choice for him, Also please do not suggest a different card that is the same price. He only has these options so in some detail please tell me which one is the best. I would really appreciate it.

Depending on what he plays, the SLI could potentially have the best performance. If there are not performance patches, SLI profiles, etc (old games, WoW, etc), then the 4870. I had my 8800gts 640s in SLI for a while, never had the problems people claim to have. EVGA provides even better SLI support on their site (I don't think you need an evga card to download the profiles), and performance has been good.

I would say the 8800gt SLI would produce the highest performance. If he plays at resolutions above 1680 x 1050, definitely go for the SLI 8800gt's. the 8800gt's would probably produce the most performance, but there may be difficulties. Not all games have SLI support. It also may include additional driver issues, etc. Also your power supply has to be strong enough. I honestly prefer a single card solution because it is easier to manage, produces less heat, and takes up less power. In the case at running at a low resolution, I would probably pick the 4870.

I would go with the 4870 1 gig, because you could push AA further and at 1680x1050 you could pretty much max every game except crysis you could run high and get really good frames. Plus in the future crossfire will be an option with any 4800 series card.

Have you guys used SLI? I don't believe people that claim to have this issue, because out of the 3 SLI rigs I have built, I have never seen it- 8800gts 640, 8800gts 512, and GTX 295.

no, I haven't used SLI, but with my crossfire I notice maybe just a slight hint of microstutter only when playing crysis but no other games. I don't even know if is microstutter and its on rare occasions, it may be because the frames fluctuate from 100FPS to 30FPS and its this. I was just suggesting it may be seen but maybe not, but any way the 4870 1 gig does perform very well on its own. If microstutter is guaranteed not to happen then the SLI would be the way to go.

Yes I have used SLI. It affected only some games, but when it did it drove me crazy.
