hey. i was just wondering how the 360 controller works with the pc!

1. I guess it's wireless and you need bluetooth on your pc in order for it to work, right?

2. can you use the same controller as for the consolo, or do you need a special one for the PC?

3. Do all PC games work with the 360 controller? Are the 360-control compatible games marked with a special logo on them? And if you have the same game for the PC as for the 360, will the controlls be exactly the same?

4. can you use the 360 controller for the pc while not playing a game, or is it restricted to gaming only?

thank you.

1) As far as I know, the wireless 360 controllers don't work for the PC. You'll need a wired controller, which plugs straight into a usb port on your computer.

2) Yes, you can use the wired 360 controller that came with your console with the PC. They make a "360 Controller for Windows", but I'm not sure there's much of a difference.

3) No, not all PC games work with the 360 controller. But, the 360 controller works just like a PC gamepad, so as long as the game supports gamepads or joysticks, you should be able to get it to work. Some games actually have built-in support for the 360 controller, like Jericho and BioShock.

4) Not that I know of, unless there's a program that lets you control your PC with a joystick.

Er, SentientGames is not quite right... 1) The wireless 360 controller can work with PC, but you'll need the specially-produced, official receiver. The wireless controllers don't use Bluetooth, by the way - they use 2.4 GHz radio. Microsoft Hardware website has more information here. 2) You can just plug the wired 360 controllers that come with the consoles to your PC, and Windows Update will download the drivers for you. Alternatively, you can download the drivers yourself from the Microsoft Hardware website. They do sell special PC-specific ones, but the only difference is they include driver CDs in them. As mentioned earlier, wireless ones need the official receiver to work. 3. Not all games will support the 360 controller, especially older ones and games that are not usually played with controllers, such as RTSs. There is the "Games for Windows" bar at the top of the cover of certain games, but not all GFW games support the controller, and non-GFW games don't necessarily don't support the controller. Many newer games, especially console ports, have adopted the 360 controller as the standard PC controller, and will feature native support with fully mapped controls. Check your games' settings menu. 4. Try xpadder. It's quite involved, but will allow you to map keys, mouse movements and other commands to your controller.

Oh, cool. I didn't know they made a receiver for the wireless controllers. That would be handy for me. But I stand by my comment that there really isn't a difference between a 360 Controller and a 360 Controller for Windows. They work the same and they use the same drivers - the only difference is one comes with the drivers on a CD while the other downloads the drivers automatically when you plug it in. If you already have a wired 360 controller, there's no sense in buying a new one just for the PC.

Like the other guy said before you just need a receiver and a program to convert the keyboard controls to the 360 controller. As he did i recommend you use xpadder. It works great and you can set different profiles for each of your games with the program (i.e. different buttons on the controller and linked to different keys on the keyboard). It works in and out of games, but you need to start the program whenever you power on your pc. So try out xpadder it works really great.

Indeed. Most games should support it just fine, but others might not recognize the triggers. In an event such as that, just bind the triggers to keyboard controls using Xpadder.

You can also take you 360 controller that you're using for your pc and take it over to your friends house who has a 360 and hook it up to that. I got the wireless controller for vista and I take my controller to my buddies house all the time when we play on his 360.

thanks for all the answers, guys!

is there really any point of buying an xbox if you have a pc, then? I mean, apart from the console-exclusive games, and xbox live.. and the fact that plugging your computer to your TV isn't always that much of a pleasant experience?

though im already sure i'll be getting a sony ps3, microsoft do some things right too!

As stated before, all you need is the reciever. It costs $20. Once you have it installed (windows update will do this once you are plugged) in you are ready to go.

The 360 controllers works with most games. I have had no trouble with San Andreas, Xmen Legends II or Overlord. Some of the games like Overlord already have Xbox controller profiles loaded, the others you need to program.

Wish I could use the PS3 controls, too! I'm not gonna buy an xbox now, but the next xbox could wake some interest, if i havent already bought a PS3.. I've always been loyal to sony, and xbox seems kind of like the "mean enemy", if you know what i mean! + its graphics are said to actually be better than the playstations at some points! meh, its a tough world.

I own a high end pc and i also have a 360.... and im glad i have a 360 to be honest... Because there are some games that are only on the 360.... Lost Odyssey, Forza 2, NBA 2k8, Ninja Gaiden 2, etc... games that i cant find on pc.

PC gaming is my fav, but 360 is definatly my fav of the consoles i own.

4) Not that I know of, unless there's a program that lets you control your PC with a joystick.

SentientGames

There is a program called JoyToKey, it's a freeware app I found. Don't know where I found it, but you can map keystrokes to a joystick. Dug it up because HalfLife 2 didn't have joystick support and I was trained on consoles (Intellivision/NES) so I'm better with the gamepads.

The controller itself is really decent. If you've got a good rig, it's like having a 360, but it has a bigger selection of games, runs at a higher res, and doesn't crap the bed once a year. I hated it when I first got it because MS had lousy support for XP drivers, but it appears as if they've addressed that now. Mine's wired though... you can use it in the console too. Don't know about the wireless ones. For the PC they come with a dongle... maybe it'd work with a console controller, but you'd still need the dongle.

I don't see why you would use a 360 contoler to play a PC game. Mouse and keyboard is just so much more efficient.

I don't know what you believe, but as far as I'm concerned, playing games on a PC isn't about playing with a mouse and keyboard or a controller. Playing games on a PC is about playing with any kind of controller you want.

Can you tell me what you did to make the 360 controller work in SA, please?
