I've ordered a Powercolor 3870 (yet to be shipped, not in stock), and I was wondering what kind of performance I would get with certain games. The most intense game I have both graphically and CPU wise is probably Oblivion, and another decently intense game graphics wise is F.E.A.R.. I've also got Call of Duty 4, but I'm pretty sure that game will run with no hitches on 1680x1050.

The rest of my specs are in my sig, what kind of frames could I come to expect from these games running at 1440x900?

Thanks in advance.

You will be able to play most games on high settings. For Crysis, probably medium settings.

This is on a 1440x900 resolution.

If I was thinking about getting a 21.6'' monitor (With resolution 1680x1050). Would I need a beefier cardthan the HD 3850 256 MB to play at that resolution for most games (not crysis)? And if I did reduce the resolution for games like Crysis will it look bad? Should I get a different (smaller) monitor if I wanted that card?

Nice. What average frame rates will I be able to get, around 40 or higher?

It depends on the game, and what resolution/settings you want to play.

You will be able to play most games on high settings at a decent resolution.

Oblivion will be easy, FEAR will be easy but COD4 has some driver/engine problems. You may have to tweak the game's settings to run it well (at 1680x1050--1440x900 should be fine though).

Crysis (another with driver problems) you should be able to run at high (maybe with a few specs at medium) at 1440x900. I run the game at 1680x1050 at medium/high on an X1900 XTX (although I do admit that the FPS drops to around 10-20 during hectic fights).

EDIT: COD4 Performance:

Its obvious that AMD's driver team needs to get busy, as even CrossFire doesn't do well at all. Which is extremely odd as AFR (CrossFire's "technique) almost always brings in a good performance benefit.

Heck, the 8600 GTS beats the HD3850 which is an obvious sign of a driver issue.

You can play Crysis on high settings at those resolutions with a 3870. Infact it's still playable if you put some things on very high settings.

Very nice. But damn, the 3870 gets snapped in that CoD graph. Have they fixed the driver issue now, or is there still some work to be done?

And those are really nice numbers running Crysis with the 1900. The x1000 series (later models anyway) still hold up fairly good with games released recently, I have to say my 1800 runs FEAR and CoD4 much better than I thought it would.

They're still working on the drivers, which I hope get released in either the Catalyst 7.12 or 8.01 release.

Does two 8800gts's 320 sli really perform worse than a single 8800gts?

My 7800gt runs COD4 quite well. You shouldn't have any problem at a 1400x900. Which is my native res.

I can tell you from personal experience that the HD3870 is a pretty great card, depending on how much you get it for of course.

In DX9, it runs absolutely terrific. Im playing world in conflict with an average of 30 FPS completely maxed out across the board, and I know its not useful for you, but when I play BF2, Im playing at 1280x1020, and 8xAA, and I usually get 85-100 FPS. however, when switching over the DX10, you will probably get a 60-70% performance drop, whichwas EXTREMELY dissappointing for me, but I doubt that it is the fault of the HD3870, and not the fault of DX10.

yeah, something about those specs is a little bit fishy, like getting a major performance drop when using 2 HD3850s as opposed to 1 HD3850

That's not useless at all, I have BF2 as well, running at 1440x900, runs fine with no hitches (but no AA) on my X1800.

Glad to see another bf2 player! eternal classic of a shooter if ever there was one. Thinking about trying bf2142, have you tried it at all? BTW i have a 2900 pro at xt speeds, it tears through nearly everything. r600 and derivatives are good cards.

Yeah, on 1024x768 though, crysis runs well at around 25-45fps avg on all high settings w/ 2xaa. assuming the rest of your comp is up to par.

yeah i doubt the results in relation to the 8800 gt and the hd 3870 when the two cards are only 1k points apart in 3dmark06 benchresults, somone is an ATI discriminator. Tech report is probably cooped with Nvidia.

I also at the moment have a PCIE mobo, whereas the card is PCIE 2.0. Will there by an severe limitations or bottlenecking when it is forced to go backwards to the older PCIE slot?

Why do people order parts, then ask? I think thats the most ridiculous thing ever. Anyways it will max out any game @ 19x12 besides Crysis

Because I know it's a good card, I just wanted to know what frame rates to expect. I've been looking up stuff on it for a fair bit, I just wanted to know what some other people knew/thought. It wasn't just some random gambit (ordering the actual card) on my part, I was just doing some more digging with this thread.

I have that card and love it. It runs very quiet and I play Crysis on everythinv Very High no AA @ 12x10 and get an average of 25 FPS. Which is playable with me i'm not a huge FPS guy. At times it will go down during huge fights but ONLY for a second while (i'm not sure but...) I guess it "attacks" all the information that suddenly came up.

Great card I got the HIS version and for 230 on the 2nd day it came out and now they've increased in prices. Doesnt make a difference just a few $ but hey, I'll never complain about saving a dollar.
