3870x2 forsure. Its beating all the highend GPUs and it doesnt even have a supported driver yet. BTW, the 8800gtx has been discontinued.

Well since the Ultra is a volt modded GTX, it will be too. Because the production line has been stopped for the GTX. But they are going through the rest of their inventory. New 8800GT, 8800GTS, 9800GTX and 9800GX2 are going to live on the name.

The HD 3870 X2 has more room to grow, with improvements from ATi's drivers and CrossFire optimizations in games, and the potential to create a tri- or quad-GPU CrossFire by linking with another 3870 or X2 card. The issue though is that the ability of making this card work out is the quality of the drivers. Also, if you run a game that does not mix well with SLi nor CrossFire, you basically are then stuck with the lowest denominator - a single GPU's power, which in this case is only around the same level of any retail HD 3870. There's also the issue in how ATi does its drivers, and gives grossly preferential treatment to Direct3D over OpenGL, and the inflexibility of creating game profiles for games or apps that ATi doesn't include a profile for. And at least with regard to the 9800 Pro's I have had, getting them to cooperate with any of ATi's monthy driver releases was a constant hassle; one that simply never existed with an NVIDIA product. What resolution are you going to play at though? Depending on how much AA/AF you intend to apply and what resolution you want to play at, the 8800GTX may still be the better choice.

I actually dont think that ATI 3870x2 will beat 9800gx2 for one simple reason... The 3870x2 was released before the 9800gx2, I bet they have a lab that they are compareing the cards right now. But I digress it will be verry hard to beat the 3870x2 which hasent been utilized to its full potential yet, also crossfire support in march might stomp nvidia but who knows.. Well have to see.

1. What is a good X38 mobo (or should i just go P35)

2. Q6600 or the E8400?

also if you wan to add to overlcoking get the DFI Bloodiron P35 chipset its a beastly when it comes ot overclcoking

or if you want to crossfire the 3870x2 get the gigabyte x38 mobo

your choice

I just made a new computer and the only struggle is Crysis... -_-

But everything else maxes out and runs smoothly (Valve games, the witcher, call of duty, world in conflict)

3870x2

Asus P5k Deluxe

4 gigs of ram

150 GB Raptor

E8400

I'd say go with the 3870x2 just because it's newer and the 8800gtx will have a replacement sooner than the 3870x2

i've actually just made the camp switch.

currently have 2x XFX XXX Edition 8800 GTXs and have now bought a 3870 X2 to replace them.

a really good review can be found here

that review didnt include the Ultra, since im pretty sure the 3870 X2 hasnt really beaten the Ultra yet, not with its current drivers anyway. the Ultra is still a monster. the reason why i swapped was i am over SLI now, want something new and easier to maintain. this is a single card solution with multi-gpu performance, and after selling my 2 GTXs i should end up being up on the money.

as for a motherboard, i was having the same dilemma, but i decided im gonna go with a Gigabyte X38 DS4 board. a user from another forum im a part of got his Q6600 G0 stable @ 4.1ghz with that board.

so yeah, if you guys are in Australia and want a GTX or 2, with the Zalman Vf-1000/RHS-88 ramsink combo installed, and an XFX 680i LT motherboard, let me know ;) haha. im gonna get a TOS violation for that arnt i.
