How would 4 250gb hard drives in raid 0 work out? would there be a huge performance upgrade vs 1TB hard drive? im looking for performance not reliability. (All hard drives that im talking about are 7200 rpm.) Thank you!
Two drives in RAID provides fantastic performance over one drive. 4 drives wont double the performance of 2 drives in RAID, but you will see a HUGE increase in performance.
Do be careful though, as any drives that fail will cause your system to crap out. You are 4 more times as likely to suffer from data loss.
I had RAID 0 in my old PC, I didn't see too big a difference over 1 drive. IMO it's not worth it. You're better off spending 1/3 the price on a 1TB over 4 250GB drives. Unless you have one of those dedicated RAID cards, not worth it.
Raid 0 vs a raid card? That is not really a contrasting question. Raid cards from manufactures like areca have way way way better performance, usually seen in raid 5 setups. Raid 0 with 4 hard drives I don't recommend, if one fails your dead. I do reccomend 3xhds in raid 0, with an onboard raid controller 3 vs 4 hard drives in raid 0 has very little performance difference, the different between 2 and 3 is large but not 3 and four. I use 3x320 hds in raid 0 on my desktop, and 6x500 gigs in raid 5 in my server works nicely, also nvidia motherboards are weaker in raid than intels, but have a nicer raid manager.
