420wt is enough to run the x2900xtx 512mb.  It depends on how many amps per rail you have.  The 8800gtx runs on a 375 DELL PSU.

What PSU do you have? It isn't all about wattage.

on the power supply itself it says model number RX-420 K, then it has a table thing with +3.3 V and underneath it it says 26 A, then it says +5 V and it says 32 A, then +12 V and it says 20 A. i dont know what this means do you?

you only need 20 amps to power the new ATI cards? would 36 amps power an 8800?

I actually ended getting mine at Best Buy. Try and get something with good specs, and that has a lifetime warranty. Lifetime Warranties are pretty much the best, so even if it does fry, they will replace it.

Ya know, I've been wondering the same thing - I'll be upgrading to the new ATI 2900XT, but the power requirements seem to be rediculous.

My current setup is a 550W Neo HE, which is manuafactured by Seasonic. I'm running a E6600@3.3, 7 case fans, 2 HDD's... all of that, running at the 100% would probably use about 210w I'd guess. So, if the 2900XT has a max usage of 240 or less, I should be fine.  Normally I'd just replace the PSU, but this thing was pretty pricey back when I bought it... and it's extremely high quality and I'd hate to have to replace it so soon.

So, here's hoping my current PSU makes it through another round of upgrades. Do you all have any updated info on this? I should be fine with my current PSU, shouldn't I?

You just gotta know.

It the HD2900xt will be using under 200w.
I  would say a minimum of 500w, with a about 35amps on the +12v rail.

Probably, if it can output about 400w on the +12v rail.
