There is some variation on the quality of SD video on a HDTV. A lot depends on the model of the HDTV.
If you have already purchased your TV, can't you hook up the PS2 and check it out yourself?
In addition, if you don't like the 4:3 look, you can always have your HDTV upconvert the image to 16:9.
I have hooked it up, and looked at it, and found it to be okay, but I want the best quality, as you may imagine, and because of the size of the room, and the weight of the SDTV I can't get a good comparison, and the fact my cords I put into place perfectly and I have no hope of undoing it without just completely messing it all up, I thought I could get some opinions. From non-HD television programs, I have found converting the image to 16:9 lessens quality, and stretches out the picture. There is some variation on the quality of SD video on a HDTV. I have a Samsung 32 in. 8000:1 contrast ratio, if that helps any.
A lot of Ps2 games have 16:9 mode on the settings in game so use that. Looks good with a decent TV.
Also set your PS2 settings on the hardware, and use a ps2 component cable.

I wouldnt say alot of them do, some of the newer ones made in the past couple years do, but amongst those only so many are worthy playing any way. I have about 30-40 PS2 games and i'd venture to guess only a couple of them have a 16:9 option, usually bigger budget gamesl ike God of War or FF12.

Samsung does an excellent job (among others) of stretching 4:3 aspect images into 16:9. If you remember a few yeasrs back when HDTV's would make people's faces and bodies look as if they are standing in front of a clown mirror. Those issues are long gone. You would need to sit inches away from the TV to see any stretching these days.

I dont know about that, a stretch is still a stretch, not much that can be done about it. Unless you mean the panromaic modes some sets use, by keeping the center nomral and progressivley stretching out as it goes to the end, but to me that looks pretty much as bad.
