Call it a coup for Activision Blizzard ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The video-game maker sold 4.7 million copies of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2"in the first 24 hours of its release in North America and the United Kingdom, the company said, bringing in $310 million and makingthe gamethe biggest-selling launch ever.

The game went on sale worldwide Tuesday, but the $310 million represents only sales in North America and Britain, so the overall total is likely even higher.

Shares of Activision were up 23 cents, or 2%, to $11.61.

Analysts forecast sales of 11 million to 13 million copies by the end of 2009. The game will likely be a bright spot for retailers who sell it,analysts said, even at $60 each.

Estimates for launch-day sales ranged from $300 million to $340 million

The previous record for the biggest video-game launch was Take Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto IV," which sold 3.6 million units, or $310 million, on its first day of release in April 2008.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare2"is the sixth installment in the franchise. The global gaming industry is estimated at$50 billion.

Last week, Activision posted third-quarter net income of $15 million, or a penny per share, an improvement from thenet loss of $108 million, or 8 centsper share, it posted in the same period last year.Excluding charges, Activision would have earned 4 cents per share, in line with expectations.

Well, say goodbye to any patches for dedicated server support, Activision is cleaning up.

Thoughts?

Everyone gets enjoyment from games, casual gamers just have so much lower standards that I wonder why they even like bad games such as this. FPS getting popular is pretty much the worst thing that has ever happened to gaming. Well, after Xbox of course.

chrisrooR

You do realise that CoD 4 sold about 14 million copies, right? And CoD:World At War sold over 11 million. So they 'cleaned up' on the last couple of titles as well.

As for the dedicated server issue, there are clear indicators from the feedback on the MW2 forums that something has to be done to improve IWnet on PC, and dedicated server support would go some way to alleviating the issues many players are experiencing. If they simply decide to ignore the PC community (as they have until now), then they would probably do better to forget about making games for the PC platform altogether in future.

The majority of those 4.7 million sales of MW2 so far are the console versions. The PC sales will be just a small percentage of overall sales, just as with the previous two titles (CoD 4 sold about 1.9 million on PC). Personally I think MW2 will sell somewhat less than that on PC, and many people who have bought it are unsatisfied with their purchase.

Because they spend 2-3 times as much on advertising. Advertising sells your product. Development costs are dwarfed these days by the money big companies like EA and Activision dole out on advertising.

Dedicated server support would completelyalleviate the issues many players are experiencing. That's only true issue. The existence of IWnet in and of itself is the problem.

But I sharply disagree with the statement "there are clear indicators... that somethinghas to be done." The money is made from the console versions, and if they all of sudden include dedicated server support now, they wouldn't be able to charge for maps or other DLC that they are sure to push in the future. If dedicated servers showed up, I'd go home now and buy the game. But they won't.

Man, I played the game at a buddies house yesterday. We beat it in 4 hours . There is no difference between the previous version and the current one as far as mechanics are concerned. This is an expansion pack. And quite frankly, I have been a avid PC gamer AND console gamer for over 20 years, I have never seen critics give so much acclaim towards a game when the campaign only lasts 4-5 hours. I remember 3 or 4 years ago that would be unheard of. Something just doesnt sit right with me, either my expectations are getting higher when it comes to gaming or critic's expectations are dropping, especially when it comes to games with deep pockets.

When I say something has to be done, it doesn't necessarily mean including dedicated server support, although that would be the most sensible and ideal solution. I'm aware of the probable reason for the IWnet system (to shovel DLC), but if they fail to address the issues they may find the multiplayer dies in a couple of months - and there will be hardly anyone left to buy any DLC. Whoever is doing their cost/benefit analysis needs to be sacked.

As for the 'indicators', I'm referring to real feedback on the MW2 forums from people experiencing problems with the following:

* general latency and lag spikes
* connecting to IWnet due to NAT settings
* finding a reliable game host for certain game modes
* host migration failing
* the need to open all ports on your router to get a decent connection (and leave your PC wide open to hacker attacks in the process)
* no host localisation (which leads to inflated ping and language barriers)
* no ability to even report hackers let alone kick them

If IW continues to bury their head in the sand, MW2 multiplayer will become a ghost town, and all this 'investment' they claim to have made will be a total waste of resources.

This just proves that boycotters of games will never be taken seriously. They can complain and claim they aren't going to buy the game, but come time of release they fold faster than Superman on laundry day.

I would that it's the Call Of Duty brand sold MW2. Let's face it, most of the people only bought the game because it's "the new call of duty", so it's gotta be good. Well this time they are wrong. To make things clear I'm not bashing the whole series. Personally i enjoyed COD 1, 2 and MW very much but MW2 feels, like someone have said earlier, more like an expansion pack with a new single player campaign. IMO 60$ is way to much to pay for it, and it's a total rip off when you think of paying additional cash for new multiplayer maps. cheers xD

I don't know what point you're trying to make here. If you haven't experienced a problem yourself, that's fine and good for you. But others have. Should their problems simply be discounted because they are in a minority? They paid for the game like everyone else.

As for most other developer forums I've visited over the years, they tend to create a 'Technical Support' sub-forum, or start threads asking for feedback on bugs and other problems so that they can get to work on a patch. There's nothing even remotely like that at IW - in fact, a lot of threads raising issues have simply been deleted without explanation, and no member of the IW team has bothered to post anything to assist anyone.

I call that shoddy customer service at best. Bioware and many other developers put IW to shame.

[QUOTE="ggnoree"] im gonna go with this guy personally, i really enjoy the cod series. admittedly, the game mechanics haven't changed all that much since cod1, but i like them all the same. (though being a history buff makes me sorta miss when it was a wwII shooter...)REforever101
I agree but i like the fact they ditched the WWII. Seriously why cant we have fun with a nice non complicated game?
[QUOTE="ggnoree"]

Yes, yes, everyone has a theory why 5 million people bought the game, idiots, wanna be gamers, casuals, HOW ABOUT THAT SOME PEOPLE BOUGHT IT JUST TO **** HAVE FUN?

fudgeblood

There are people who think 4 hour long corridor shooters are fun? Well I'll be damned.

Yeah, and i cant believe that there are people who actually like borring and hard military simulators without enganging storyline....but atlest those 5 millions "ARE" gamers and prefer to play a "game" instead of a total simulator.

Ohh and its not 4 hours, its 8 hours and "quality> quanity" so it doesnt matter how long it lasts, as long its awesome for as long it lasts.
I agree but i like the fact that they ditched the wwii we got enough of those already.

This just proves that boycotters of games will never be taken seriously. They can complain and claim they aren't going to buy the game, but come time of release they fold faster than Superman on laundry day.

THGarrett

Nah, the people who were irritated at the boycotters decided to join the *public* boycott group. It's all over their posts if you take the time to read them.
