Hi I initally bought a 4850, and then a 4870 but forgot that my mobo supports crossfire. From reviews I read it seems the dual 4850's are quite a bit better than the 4870. I figure I can sell my 4870 on ebay and just another 4850.

My question is will I have enough power to do so?

My PSU is a silverstone 600W with 42A total on 12V rails combined.

My system is a Q6600 at stock speeds a gigabyte P35-ds4, 2 sata hd's 1 IDE hd, 1 sata DVD burner and an IDE CD burner, and potentially two 4850's, 4gb in 2 sticks of pc 6400 memory.

I am asking because on the anadtech review site they rate the power on load for a 4850 to be like 225W that x2 would be what 450 of my 600. But I used the PSU calculator at:

http://web.aanet.com.au/SnooP/psucalc.php

and it says I will only use like 456W on load while gaming.

So will I be able to Xfire the two 4850's with a 600W PSU or not?

Thanks

It's possible. I'm not too familiar with Silverstone's PSUs, but if they're made by a good OEM they should be able to handle Crossfired 4850s. Of course, sample variance might make your unit better or worse than normal, so the only way to know is to try it out. If it's not, it would be trivial to sell your PSU and buy a better unit.

may i ask the same question? i have a high quality eurotech (very popular around here) 580w psu, with 87% eficiency rate, and 2x 12v rails that combine into a "massive" 46A, i have a p35-DS3L... i MIGHT just get another 4850 when i need to upgrade, instead of just buying a new gfx card... and btw, how big is the performance drop from 16x/16x crossfire to16x/8x?

I have a gigabyte P35-DS3L in a secondary PC, it only has 1 pci-e video card slot so crossfire isn't possible.

Not sure, but the only other pci-e slots on that mobo are the pci-e x1 slots and as far as I know there aren't even any or very few video cards that will physically fit in that slot.

600w will be fine don't even worry... 4850s do not use that much power.

Yea 4850X2 is due out in about a month, I going for a 4870x2 my self as I am a cooling freak and dont want to buy 2 more vgawaterblocks, :) The 4870x2 is about $560 Canadain, judging by the 4850/4870 price gap the 4850X2 should be about $380ish

The DS3L has on PCI-E. Also P35 only supports 16x/4x crossfire(with a few exceptions), so no you really should get X38/X48 if you want crossfire. Even P45 with 8x/8x will limit 4850 crossfire.

Not true, 600W will be enough and 4850crossfire > single 4870.
