I have read in some reviews (on newegg) that people have been having stability issues when using the 4870 while playing games (low fps, crashing, freezing etc.). I also read that it might just be with Vista. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Download AMD Fusion (only if you have an AMD processor):http://game.amd.com/de-de/drivers_fusion.aspx?p=1

Uninstal Folding@Home if you instaled it.

Get Catalyst 9.6 Dirvers.

Reset all BIOS settings to defaults except the ones you are sure will not have any impact on performance.

Disable Catalyst AI.

Do not use AA in games, enable it through CCC.

Go to monitor properties and lock your refresh rate to 60HZ (if that is your recommended refresh rate)

And so on...

PS: Make sure you are using only box filter AA or hardcore games like Crysis will stutter even with 4xAA

The problem sounds like it was based on factory clocked cards that were overclocked too far or the coolers were ineffective and the temps become to high. I remember buying a 7800gt a while back and had the same issues, but when I underclocked my card a hair, then all the issues were resolved.

The greatest evil which bothered me for a long time and made me consider ever buying AMD again is the damn Folding@Home. When you install it, GPU usage is ALWAYS at 99%, CPU at about 30% and the temperatures are constantly going up. DO NOT INSTAL IT AND IF YOU DID UNINSTAL IT. It almost made my graphics card pass out. Dont know who needs that utility anyway.

Nvidia has better folding support anyways. Don't buy ATI if you plan to fold it or you will be disappointed. What I noticed from folding@home is that it will never use 100% of multi core CPU's. My i7 without the GPU client uses only about 20% on each core and even the same amount when on the GPU client. I don't have the same problems with folding@home than you. My temps actually hover quite low (unlike prime95). It could be because I am using a scythe mugen-2 for my CPU heatsink. And for the video card, I just turn fan up on my video card and those temps hit a max around 60 C.

I never said my CPU temperatures were high. They actually rarely got over 40 degrees. The CPU usage was high (about 20~30%) But this is about 4850 graphics card and it's problem, not CPU's.

What people might blame on the video card can be caused by a whole host of other hardware (insufficient power, overclocking) or software (didn't remove previous drivers, virus/malware) issues. I have a 4850 and will vouch for it as a quality piece of hardware. Never tried folding@home and never intend to.
