Well the 8800GT still handles most modern games fine, so its not an essential upgrade.

well if you have enough cooling airflow there no danger. look 8800GT Sli vs 4870.
im not gonna judge you. but. a 8800GT superclocke edition aint so bad. what ur resolution ur playing ?
for know the power a 8800GT SLI bring vs 4870. plz look this review in all game detail. more mathematic number. ---> higher number = better. the basic of frame rate per second.
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3354&p=
my point of view. ur 8800Gt aint so bad
A little off topic fell free to read
60fps is the most common know perfection for-gaming experience. but with some lag-spike
having over 100fps. usually immunize you of lag spike but at cost of lowering graphic .
ur monitor max resolution greatly change how the video card performs

how fps work much is by minimum = in loading or heavy mass of unit or the-lag-spike
average = what it reach half of the time or more as fps.
maximum = the top it get for few second in the test.
frame rate always fluctuate from lag to good usually. with an average like said above that explain the gaming experiances
but the more video power and ram quality and cpu overclock can change it to be less common
like if your running wow 60fps. there chance you can get at some time. 30-40fps.
but it still very playable. far enough to not complain too much ;)
30-40fps gameplay is reasonable. 60fps perfect anti screen-tearing or stuttering when it under it
more fps. just loading game faster and less lag spike or any of those or at last it what i heard and seem to see my self by look with Fraps a programs to see fps in every-game or Xfire 2.0 game in window.

am playing at 1280X1024 , am only upgrading because my bro is traveling and he can get it for me

am playing Crysis on High settings ( with 1 or 2 options on medium) the other games on highest settings , i want to get it for the upcoming titles , would there be a huge improvement ? i read some reviews and it seems so but am afriad of ATI and their drivers (and heat and noise)

1280x1024 im not sure how much of a difference you would see. theres way more peopel on here that know more than me, but unless you plan on going to higher resolutions im sure the 8800 gt should be fine. how many fps are you getting on crysis?

You could probably SLi for less and beat the 4870 at the same time. Assuming you have a SLi capable motherboard and enough power.

The HD 4870 does create some high heat, but it's within operation range for the card. Also I've had no real problems with ATI's drivers. There seems to be the stereotype that ATI's drivers are absolutely horrible when they aren't. CCC is easy to use and setup, and games run great.

HD4870 has a fanfix. Mine runs really cool. A lot cooler than my old 8800GT. And the fact that I can control the fan speed and have it run cool as I want, is a huge plus. Drivers are young. This card barely came out,, What do you expect? Magic?

I'm running both my HD 4870s without the fan fix, my temps idle at about 83C and load only gets to about 90C for me.

If you play at 1680x1050 or lower it is NOT an appreciable upgrade. You will see major improvement in Crysis, some improvement in benchmarks, and little improvement in other games besides cranking AA/AF.

HD4870 stock idled 70C load 85C or so for me
35% 48C / 60C
Anything higher than that was unacceptable, as it sounded like a hairdryer.

Just don't get it dude. 1280x1024? The 8800GT is fine. Wait for the next line of ATI cards.
